Putting Too Much Detergent in Your Machine Can Make Your Wash Dirtier
In the News
I spotted this article on yahoo news but had to find another link as yahoo articles dont stay online long
It says that first, you dont need to use any washing cycle except the rapid wash option, that is adequate with todays advanced detergents
Secondly , don't put too much detergent in your machine, they say put in less than the advised amount , maximum two tablespoons
If you put extra in for good measure to get a better clean you are actually doing the opposite, the extra detergent clogs up the fibres of the clothes and retains the dirt and it does not disperse properly in the rinse
Obviously if your clothes are absolutely filthy then you may need to adjust to suit
This is good news for us, firstly to save energy with the quick wash and secondly to save money by using less detergent

I haven't used powder for many years now but use the liquid capsules instead, one per wash! I can imagine that many people do equate more detergent to cleaner washing though.
tumblespots Capsules are good T but sometimes you can find the plastic coating around the capsule doesnt dissolve completely and ends up stuck to the clothes
I use liquid nowadays but that's the same so I put the machine on a hot wash now and then to clean inside
Pfs We do that too plus once a month we put cleaning 'stuff' through the machine to stop the build up of scale.
tumblespots Thats calgon tablets T, they are good , i also have a plug in electronic water softner that coils around the main water inlet pipe i installed years ago, it softens the water and helps prevent calcium build up
telmel Not calgon but they came from Indesit when we first had them. We get them online now from whoever is cheapest. We put them through the dishwasher monthly too.
tumblespots Ah ok , i think that does a similar job T and its lemon scented, calgon tablets dont smell of anything
I always use the quickest wash on the machine and I never use as much powder as it says too. My powder always does more washes than it states on the box.
