I guess what suits one won't suit everyone. My last but one was a Gtech but after a couple of years or so it just stopped working and it is not always cost effective to repair. So I bought a Shark and have to say it's the best Hoover I've ever had. I am not a messy person but am always surprised at how much it picks up in one use. It is light and very manouverable and would highly recommend.

Many thanks for replying I have a shark now but find the lead gets in the way but your right it does pick up but it's old and I wanted to make sure I get a good replacement. I heard Gtech is good!

I know dyson do a range specifically for pet owners to get up their pet’s hair. I know Dyson are pretty pricey but i find, in my experience, they last longer than other vacuum cleaners I’ve owned

Henry’s are brilliant, it’s best vacuum I’ve ever owned no filter to get clogged up etc. Tradesman buy them as well because they are fit for the job.

rowley1943 they come on offer quite a bit, you’ll probably get one for around £100. The price of Dyson etc is crazy. The bags take a long time to fill up too and these also come on offer as are sold in many places including Asda & Sainsbury’s

I recommend a Dyson although not a cordless but a plug in that stays upright when you turn it off.

We have a shark, brilliant for pet hairs. They do a pet hair one and it is brilliant, a little pricey but well worth it.

I have a Dyson. I originally purchased the corded one but now have two hand held ones. When I had a dog I purchased the dog brush attachment which works really well and my dog loved it. Highly recommend a dyson, just check out which one best suits your needs.

In the past we have been a fan of Dyson but we now find them expensive.We also find them noisey , the battery doesn’t last long and there is poor pick up on deep pile carpets.When we need a new one we would probably go for a Henry.

I have a Miele and absolutely love it, l have a dog and my own hair is very long, it's great at suction...

Pinkspirit Thanks, for mentioning long hair. We have a Miele, too. We chose it for the suction since it advertised hanging off the wall, as well as attachments and cable length.

We prefer the plain, non-rolling vacuum head for our long human hairs as it seems rollers will get clogged too easily (don't have pets but we shed hair everywhere).

But I keep looking around and comparing vacuums because the Miele is pretty heavy, though nothing seems to be as good for long hairs and not many people mention it.

Always worth looking on ebay as you get a lot of refurbished customer returns they are heavily discounted and sometimes a discount code on top to go with it. This one;

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/285636398341

Is only £21.59 delivered using the voucher code with a pet brush and seems to have A rated energy efficiency, telescopic wand and multi-cyclonic action rather than single cyclonic and washable filters. It wouldn't be suitable for deep pile carpet though as no powered brush head. There are lots of other vacuum cleaners which are refurbished and can make use of the same discount code.

It's really about choosing a vacuum cleaner by spec, I.e. what is right for you. Some vacuums have narrow brush heads to improve suction on carpets but then you vacuum for longer. Also some don't have edge cleaning as there are thicker plastic surrounds either side of the brush bar. Also some big brand models like Shark are only single cyclonic which means filters need cleaning more regularly.

Cordless vacuums will have reduced cleaning power over time as the batteries lose capacity with age and of course there is always a small fire risk with lithium-ion batteries.

A good efficient bagless multi-cyclonic cleaner with washable filters can save you a huge amount of money over the lifetime of the cleaner with no bag and filter costs and very low energy consumption. Henry is also a good option with washable bags and a very durable design. I've noticed in offices that Henry's are often used but I think that is more about their reliability and durability than its cleaning performance. Also trademen also seem to favour Henrys. So if you are looking for a vacuum cleaner to last a very long time then probably a Henry is the right model. I have to admit my mother has the cheap Tower cylinder cleaner (as above) and a Hetty(Henry) and the suction is noticeably better on the Tower vacuum cleaner. She has had the Hetty 5 years or more and the Tower only recently though. One is used upstairs in her house and the other downstairs. She struggles with the Tower vacuum a little bit due to too much suction on short pile carpet in the hall even with the hose vent open. However she forgets to extend the telescopic wand which also reduces the suction a bit. She previously had a Power Devil single cyclonic vacuum cleaner and then used it without replacing the filter assembly so lots of dust and debris went into the motor and it was never the same again but even when it worked well it was noticeably weaker than the Hetty.
