Should I Report What Seems to Be an Abandoned Car outside My House?

Ask a Question

It has been there for at least 2 weeks and is looking dirty and covered in birds mess. It definitely hasn't moved.

There seems to be no firm idea of what to do online and i am concerned it could be stolen or used for a crime. I know i am being dramatic but there could be a body in the boot...it has been known!

I thought report to police but online it says council but again no clarity. What would you do?

Check if it is insured on the Motor Insurance Database here >> enquiry.navigate.mib.org.uk/checkyourvehicle

And if it is currently taxed and has a valid MOT here >> www.gov.uk/check-mot-status

If it is, then you can't really do anything about it if its not blocking a drive - they may have broken down or gone on holiday but they are entitled to park on the road if it is taxed, insured and MOT'ed....

emmabeckz that's grand, thank you for the advice I will let you know what happens. I do realise if it is just parked that is ok but I hate to think someone out there may have had their car stolen.

Lynibis Its interesting, it does happen quite a bit I see it on local Facebook groups quite a bit - does anyone know who this car belongs to etc....I know in Dubai they were dumping supercars at one stage 😆 Madness!

emmabeckz hi Emma have just done the first link and got this:

You are only entitled to the insurance information about the vehicle for one or more of the following reasons:

you are within the United Kingdom; and

it is either registered/owned/insured by you or your employer;

you are permitted to drive it;

you are an Insurance Broker or Agent and acting on behalf of your client.

It is an offence to wrongfully obtain information of this nature without any of the above reasonable causes. The information provided must not be used for any purposes unrelated to this enquiry.

Lynibis oh just check the MOT then maybe? I checked one yesterday on that link but it was my own car to check it worked

emmabeckz I then did the mot and insurance and it has both. I then came across our local police on facebook where you could send an email and got auto response which said this should be used for blah blah and gave 999 for emergencies and another for non urgent. I think I will forget about it, even though it's an eyesore outside my kitchen window.🤔

Yes especially if you want it moving. If its stolen or anything the owner will want it back. The police may just do a welfare check on the owner

If it's taxed and insured - see emmabeckz's answer - and it's not blocking a drive they can basically park there as long as like regardless of how annoying it is. Try checking on facebook groups in your area to see if anyone is reporting it stolen. Fingers crossed for you.

EmmaWright762 I am definitely not annoyed, I don't get annoyed or angry ever but I was just wondering if it was stolen and I would feel guilty if it was stolen and I did nothing. I may speak with my neighbour.

Most of the time the first signs a car is abandoned is the tyres are either very low on air

or completely flat L, the next clue is when the wheels go missing 😉

We had a car abandoned in our residential car park, the council were very good and took it away. It was taxed etc but had a couple of flat tyres which didn’t seem right like it had been stolen, hopefully it got back to its owner

We had one last year, I put it on Facebook, "anyone know who this car belongs too" or I'm calling police

martinlufc5637 good idea, I was a bit worried about what you can put on facebook, but seems easiest to do.

Lynibis I would put it on Facebook,add a photo of the car and reg plate, if no-one answers, phone police and report as a possible stolen car

Check online to see if it is taxed, insured and MOT'ed. If it is put it up on a local fb page to see if anyone knows who it belongs it. If you don't hear anything from there then phone the council. They will probably take it to a pound.

Well I give up. Seems I will have to put up with an eyesore directly outside my window. Yes it is taxed MOT and insured but that doesn't mean it hasn't been abandoned. No one has been helpful, council or police.

My own opinion is that being 33 years old it has given up the ghost and is too costly to repair.

33 years old car. What make and model as I may be interested. Joke.

You cannot do much I am afraid, if council and local police refused to do anything then perhaps pick your bucket and a sponge and go outside to wash it if that is bothering you so much. Sparkling clean and vintage car under a leafy tree is a nice view. 😀

From my understanding it's standing under a tree, so look at it when doing your dishes, try not to focus on a car.

Body in the boot, must have been mummified, as it doesn't smell yet. 🙃👻

SebK84 my main and initial concern was that it was stolen. I still believe it to be abandoned.

Other year we had a abandoned jeep outside our house, we didn't know who it belonged to, it was outside for 6 month then moved to where our taxi driver neighbour parks then moved back outside our home..

I turned out during covid a neighbour a few houses down had bought the jeep with the intention of doing it up, he then got covid so nothing got done with his plans..

This was something that went on for over a good year.
