School Summer Holidays Too Long?

Ask a Question

Are the schools summer holidays too long?

There is calls to take the summer holiday break down from 6 weeks to 4 and instead tack that time to make the one week half term breaks longer.

Yes. They should be split up more over the year. Its not like we are a tropical country and its too hot to go to school in the summer. When my kids were at school near the end of the summer holidays they were soooo bored !

suevernon1968 Do you think cutting it down to 4 weeks would work?

SamGoodship yes - and instead of giving them as full weeks- do long weekends instead.

Leannexxx If they moved a couple of weeks off they would be attaching them to other half terms, so working parents would still have that issue.

Not sure it's such a good idea, if you go away in the school holidays it's already really busy everywhere ,and now they want to cram all those people going away into just 4 weeks rather than 6. Prices are already ridiculous in the holidays they will be even worse with greater demand .

Mango4 on a holiday program ages ago they advised to fly from an airport out of your area- the flights are sometimes cheaper as different counties school holidays can differ for a few days. Dont know if its true though.

I would feel sorry for kids if their summer holidays got reduced. Summer is usually best weather and i used to look forward to the 6 weeks holiday.

However in hindsight i did used to get a little bored after about 4 weeks

Too long for nowadays yes. Not only do children get bored after a few weeks, both parents working is now the norm. And childcare is expensive.

Traditionally, the man was the breadwinner whilst the woman stayed at home with the kids. But that often isn't the case now.

However the holidays are split childcare is always a nightmare. Luckily when my kids were little and I was still married my husband used to work 6am til 2pm and I worked 2.30 til 8.30. It seems that grandparents are helping out more if possible. The parents that i was close to and could trust - we had a swap deal - so if she had to go to work I would have her kids and vice versa (is that how its spelt lol)

Yes they are far to long.I think parents nowadays wish they could be shorter. Children get bored quickly. With everything going up in price,it's hard to keep the children entertained without it costing the earth.I think cutting it down to 4 weeks may stop them getting bored. They won't know unless they give it a try.

Far too long. Give them 4 weeks...and make it start in June . That's enough.

No. Children need a break from school, to be rested, relaxed and bored so as to find things to fill in their time.

I had a month longer (than my children do no) Summer holidays as a child. It made for a lot of wonderful memories. My parents, both working full-time, managed to keep us busy with activities whilst they worked around us. No idea how!

Nope. It's needed. I work in a school. We need the 6 weeks. Kids need that length of time to be kids. Anyone who says kids get bored. It's good for them to get bored because it teaches them to use their imaginations and come up with things to do
