Are Schools Doing Enough in the Heat?

Ask a Question

Do schools do enough for kids in the hot weather?

Local community forums have seen an uprise in posts complaining about kids still having to wear blazers at 25c or not being allowed to grab a drink.

2 of our schools are horrendous. Architects thought it would be great to put loads of glass on them. No air con. Freeze in the winter boil in the summer in the one I work in. One secondary windows don't open. Didn't have air con for a few years and when put in it didn't work. Staff do their best for kids but are limited by those who sit in nice cool offices in some government building

In my sons school he has to take a water bottle everyday and has access to water anytime.

Regards to blazer I think they should be allowed to take them off in class

possy I hate that in my child's school kids have to ask to take blazers off. I spend my time as a primary school teacher teaching kids to listen to their bodies and take jumpers off when hot not asking for them to have to do the opposite. Most schools allow this with water bottles. We used to only be allowed drinks at playtime and lunchtime. Yes we survived but looking back so wrong.

possy When I was in school they wouldn't let us take blazers off and we were sweltering during heatwaves!

Unfortunately some teachers don’t apply any common sense (which is worrying in itself). Why do we insist on treating kids differently from adults, now i know they will mess about a bit and stuff but why should they not be able to have a drink when they feel thirsty.

Local comp near me allows children to wear their school branded Sports kit during warm weather, don;t see anything wrong with that, all children dressed the same and they look quite tidy in their black shorts and blue t shirts.

Blazers are optional in our school and only for the seniors. I've had kids in class wearing their PE kits as it was too hot to change out of their shorts. As long as they are working I don't care what they are wearing. Kids are always allowed to drink in my classroom and if they need to go get a drink from the water fountain I let them out. They don't have to ask to take their jumpers off or to have a drink.

At our daughter's school they still got to wear full school uniform no matter what the weather but there's no air conditioning and the building as so much glass jn

At our sons school, they have water and plastic cups in the classrooms for them to use, or the teachers will fill up their water bottles up for them
