Self Serve or Manned Till?

Ask a Question

Do you prefer to use self serve or a manned till?

The amount of shoplifting is apparently rising and lots of the supermarkets thing the self serve machines are to blame.

I prefer a self serve till but my local supermarkets have put barriers in that need to be opened by the staff pressing a button and half the time they’re busy with other customers or chatting so end up having to stand there.

jms19 I heard the news about the barriers awhile back but thought the backlash made the supermarkets get rid of them

hky not round where I live, i have no problem with the barriers but i do resent having to stand there waiting for a staff member to press a button cause in my experience a lot of them are chatting so i end up standing there

jms19 I use both. Manned till if I have a money off voucher otherwise it is self-service for me. Where I live you cannot fool the self-service tills in Asda, Morrisons or Tesco. These stores have advanced technology and can spot wrongdoing immediately.

I like doing the scan as I shop so it’s all packed without having to get staff to scan using the conveyor belts. I’ve heard that people weigh their fruit picking the cheapest kg price for example grapes put through as carrots.

Pjran I heard of someone who had an error on the self serve till that wouldn't scan their whole chicken so they simply just put it in their bag and didn't pay

hky that’s dreadful but it’s stealing really. I thought alarms would ring if you add something to your bag if un scanned.

Pjran I think because there was already an error since it wasn't scanning, the machine didn't pick it up. Or maybe they didn't put it on the scale.

But I've never heard that alarms ring? I thought the machine will just pick up on the difference in expected weight and error will just show up - I used to have the error often and it'd fix itself if I just pick up the whole shop/bag and put it back down (re-weighing) but now staff have to scan their card after every error.

They don't pay me to do their job so why should I work for free. Manned till.

Besides, those stupid self-scan machines always end up showing errors way too often and needs the assistance of a human employee to fix it. lmao

Manned till. Only if I am in a rush for 1 product do I use self service. When I used one at Sainsburys it added a phantom leg of lamb because I certainly didn’t select it and I definitely wasn’t paying for it. I don’t even eat lamb. Every time I use one I need assistance anyway.

I hope those who don't use self checkouts because they aren't "getting paid" and "they take peoples jobs" also don't use internet banking/apps, online shopping websites, pump their own petrol and use cashpoints just to name a few. People love to hate on self checkouts.

RegularComper91 Really people are now forced to use them, it’s not a choice any more. Hate having to use internet all the time that often goes wrong. I still do my petrol and use a cash point they haven’t taken away. It’s also not the same experience looking around loads of stocked shops where you could touch, feel and try the quality of products. We have lost a lot. The internet is not as wonderful as everyone makes out.

Self served. I don't want to talk to people. I spend all day dealing with people so when I get to a shop I'm over it

Depending on the amount of shopping I buy depends which till I use. If it’s a big shop I use the hand held scanner, this way I’m up to date with prices as well.

I hate self serve, always need to call someone to help. Plus I like the interaction with a person.

Well the self service at our Asda is useless, they never scan properly, so I'd prefer manned/womened tills

always go to the manned tills. Trouble is our Asda often now only has one manned till to the 20 or so self service ones. They actually have about 6 manned tills left but rarely seem to have more than one or two of them staffed
