Should ALL Shops Accept Cash?

Ask a Question

Do you think all shops should accept cash? A lot have gone to card only since COVID but does it single out people who prefer to pay in cash like pensioners?

Yes I think we should keep cash in use. Easier for old people, easier to budget and don’t always want every transaction tracked. Some things you might need to keep personal.

I think it’s up to the business owner themselves to decide how they operate. They may have their own reasons for not accepting cash

Well I've just come from my local Sainsburys and they are experiencing major problems with card payment this morning , their petrol station is closed and there is absolute chaos at the checkouts, Scan and shop is down also . Lots of people leaving trolleys full of food behind , as their cards don't work and they don't have cash on them , some are going outside to the cashpoints and then coming back into pay.

Judging by this today I would say yes all shops should continue to accept cash

As cash is legal currency I see no reason why all shops shouldn't accept it, it seems absurd to me that they don't!

If you do away with cash (I know, that's another debate) how would you give anything to someone who is homeless? You can't swipe a card into their 'cup' when passing them in the street. And what about buskers? Many shops don't accept card payments below a certain amount so what do you do then? Our fish & chip shop only takes cash - nothing else!

I see no reason not to continue cash circulation especially in shops

I use my card if I am paying for the food shop but for smaller purchases I will use cash. I know plenty of people wo use cash for everything so I think it is a good idea for shops to still accept cash.

They all should be made to take cash, the Kings Shilling. It is more so important that elderly are catered for, but more importantly, is for children to see and feel the value of money, and not just pointing the plastic at a machine.

The only place I have seen card only is some self service check outs in supermarkets.

So every shop I have been to prefer cash but I only pay cash when they don't accept card.

I prefer to use cash . Especially for paying smaller businesses who face extortionate charges for accepting card payments . Automation has its benefits but once cash is gone then we have no privacy and we are all tracked. We rely on the internet for so much. Imagine the systems going down ...and they do and will. The same for driverless cars and flying taxi drones before too long. Imagine dropping out of the sky in your taxi ( especially if your card payment has been rejected ! )

For the sake of equity, yes. Not everyone can and will use non-cashless means for payment.

Cash is legal tender so should be accepted everywhere.

Yes, I still mostly pay by cash as it's my way of budgeting, I know exactly where I am.

Cash is still legal tender, why should we not be allowed to use it wherever we want.

Surely it can’t be legal to refuse it. it’s up to the purchaser how they want to pay as long as they’re paying what does it matter.

We need to use cash alot more,If we don't start using cash alot more we will lose it forever, something else for them to take off us all that belongs to this country.

(This is an example)➡️You can't give little Tommy a credit or debit card to go and buy a 10p bag of 1p, 2p & 5p sweets can you! It will come, that a mum or dad needs to take all her kids down to the corner shop because you can't just give Tommy 10p anymore to go to the shop on his own ,like he can now.Little Tommy is just an example of any child going to the shop daily for their sweets.

We need to start saying no! To keep things the way they are, they are doing things ,not for us but for power over us and coax us in a particular direction that they want us to go in.The future is 😠👎

For me I pay using card in 99% of cases, I don't like to carry cash and hate having a pocket of change, I don't particularly like taking cash in my shop either but do happily (ISH)

Yes. Older people can't be expected to go cashless. It's unfair
