Simple, Low-Cost Liquid Staves off Tooth Decay for Kids
In the News
Scientists have revealed a simple, low-cost solution to the most prevalent chronic disease among children: tooth decay
This cheap liquid called silver diamine fluoride, or SDF is said to be super effective in preventing decay and cavities
Across the U.S., school sealant programs have dental professionals visiting schools to apply a thin, protective coating on the surface of the teeth to help harden and safeguard them against tooth decay. The CDC says these dental sealants can prevent 80 percent of cavities
Lets hope they bring it here , its a shame its only for kids , us adults could do with this also

Firstly I would like to think that this isn't a panacea and that children don't then believe that they can give up cleaning their teeth completely because we all know that getting children to clean their teeth is a job in itself!
Providing the teeth cleaning is happening then I don't see a problem with this.
I had flouride treatment as a child and sometimes wonder whether it was worth it or whether I wouldn't have any teeth if I hadn't had the treatment!
tumblespots I suppose if you didnt tell the kids the precise treatment T and just said it was an additional cleaning aid then they would not think to stop brushing
telmel I think with children, it's more a case of getting them to start brushing! Remember in Uncle Buck when UB says that he has a friend who can test a toothbrush to see if they have been using them and the two children say 'We really are going to have to start cleaning our teeth!'
tumblespots Yes T, that can be a problem , i suppose you have to reward them when they brush to encourage it when they are young . I clean my dogs teeth with a sonic toothbrush after a horrendous vet bill for a clean . When i first started last year she would not let me near her, but gradually after daily use she sits waiting in the mornings for me to clean them, the reason, i give her a portion of dental stick after the clean and she loves this particular treat, so giving a reward works for me
telmel Wow, you have your dog well trained now if she waits to have them done each morning
tumblespots Sometimes i forget and she reminds me sitting on my chair staring at me until i realise what she wants
It's good but my oldest has issues with fluoride it actually makes her teeth yellow so she will need teeth whitening treatment when she's old enough
Leannexxx I dont know if this would help L but i dip my toothbrush in bicarbonate of soda powder before i apply paste and my teeth are very white , i have never used a whitening kit and just use normal supermarket toothpaste. My teeth started to discolour with age and drinking tea and coffee, but i am very pleased with the results and havent been to the dentist for a few years as i mentioned in another post, its worth a try and you get used to it after a while
Prevention always better than cure so the old adage says aka treat the cause and not the symptoms..NO judgement cos I wrecked my teeth by sweet addiction but I have always been wary of flouride. It;'s great for teeth but I fear it might induce cancer!
MelissaLee1 Yes that is one fear i also have abour flouride M , but it is forced on us by the water companies as it is sanctioned by the government as a cheap option to combat tooth decay
Well my kids have always brushed their teeth twice a day, they have no choice lol none have ever needed a filling ect...
martinlufc5637 I think it helps that we have more knowledge about tooth decay nowadays M
When i was younger we didn't have the internet or other technology to tell us the harm from sweets etc and the effects from not following the brushing regime , now everyone is more savvy
telmel I learned from my mistakes, brushing wasn't essential when I was a kid, I had loads of fillings
martinlufc5637 I know tell me about it M, we did stupid things as kids, myself and my brother used to have nut cracking contests using our teeth , on walnuts !!
Besides eating chocolate at bedtime sometimes, i am surprised i only have a couple of back ones missing and a few fillings , instead of this
