Sleep Apnea
Ask a Question
I have just been diagnosed with sleep Sleep Apnoea, a sleep disorder where breathing is interrupted repeatedly during sleep.
Tonight is the 1st time I am using the CPAP Machine, which helps to keep you airways open.
Do you suffer from this and if so, how long did it take you to get used to sleeping in the mask
I'm sorry you have been having trouble with a sleep disorder.
I haven't got sleep apnea myself, but my step father-in-law was recently diagnosed.
He was apparently waking several times a minute, so he would sleep a lot during the day, he could barely keep his eyes open during chatting or when watching TV, for example.
The machine has really helped him.
I think he said it only took about a week or so to get used to it, he actually had a mask that didn't fit correctly, so it wasn't working as well as it should, plus he has to keep his beard short, otherwise that can affect the fitting of it.
He is a changed man, he sleeps mostly through the night, I think he gets up once for a wander, as some people do, but then heads back to bed. He is never asleep throughout the day and wants to do so much more and go out more places etc.
I hope it works for you, as well as it has for him.
Life changing!
DeBunny Thank you, that's really encouraging, hopefully I will get used to the mask soon and will have more energy and be able to think more clearly.
I use a CPAP and I have for several years, now I cannot sleep without it. You can get used to sleeping with the mask in as little as a couple of weeks if you use it all the time, no skipping a night or two. Most important is to wash the mask regularly as if it forms mould and that gets in your lungs you are going to be seriously ill, use hot water and dish liquid and rinse well.
Sleepyguard Thank you, I need to persevere, I know that the few hours I did manage to sleep with the mask on wasn't as restless as without! Appreciate the advice on cleaning it, I haven't read the booklet yet, do you do this daily or weekly ?
Sorry to hear that.Is there no other way.Sleeping in that does not look comfortable at all!
