Which Spelling, Grammatical Errors, Pronunciations Really Get Your Goat.
Other
There are so many inaccuracies these days, especially in online articles, that i doubt kids will grow up knowing what is wrong or right.
My pet hate is people adding k instead of g at the end of words when speaking: Nothink, everythink, somethink etc.
No one seems to edit their writing anymore. I have just copied and pasted this: As Laurel Thomas recovered from a heart attack that nearly ended her life, she had one thing on her min - exposing Jai's deceit to Suni was sparked his exit.
What do you hate most?
People on social media are the worse offenders for this type of thing
Besides misspelling words , they rarely use full stops or commas , so sentences tend to run on from each other
I had to be careful typing this , imagine if i missed one after complaining
Chester draws instead of chest of drawers.... loads on Facebook Marketplace
didbygraham isn't it frustrating? And it takes no time at all to learn those, especially the last one.
My three most annoying ones:
There, their, and they're.
Your, you're and you'll.
Shoud/would/could/must of.
Facebook is particularly bad for this. It's full of it.
RegularComper91 I was going to refer to Facebook in my topic but just did an unconscious shrug and decided that those who don't want to learn never will. Especially as half the teachers don't know either. Going off subject.... A teacher on tipping point was asked who was President when an event occurred in 1968. She chose to answer rather than pass saying she was sure she knew it but couldn't decide between Abraham Lincoln or JFK. Needless to say she got it wrong!
Pronunciation:
Brought than bought (this one really annoys me )
"Sawr" than saw (I hate hearing sawr)
Spelling:
The three there's.
Should/would of instead of HAVE
Lynibis Haha, yep.
The only logical explanation behind "of" is if people would say "Should've" which sounds similar to "Should of," but that's grammatically wrong.
Iv noticed quite a few online influencers muddle flavour & scent. As in they'll say something such as "mmm the flavour of this perfume is divine" I have been known to shout out loud ITS SCENT! Ya not scoffing perfume down ya neck dear. Lol
Glitterandgold I never watch those sort of things but I don't doubt for one minute they are more interested in fame, fortune, likes and self promotion, rather than getting a basic education.
I think that the basic problem here is that children have not been taught grammar and spelling rules at school. We had to learn 10/20 spellings which we were then tested on.We were taught the difference between 'there' and 'their' and other words with potentially difficult spellings .This was at Junior School in the early to late fifties in my case.Shows how old I am!
Lynibis Well done to both you and especially your granddaughter for her high achievement. Most people I know of don't have anyone to correct their English grammar to a very high standard (me included). I'm afraid I have forgotten a lot of the English grammar that I was taught at school. I am embarrassed when I reread some of my past comments and spot appalling English grammar.
jam45 that's very nice of you thanks for your kind words. It started when she showed me a story she wrote which was full of errors and when I asked why the teacher didn't correct it she said they weren't allowed to demean the students. She wanted me to show her the errors and this became our happy time together as I had her most weekends. She has had an article published in one of the broadsheets and I am trying desperately to finish my novel before I croak it lol! She is head of English at our top boys school. I now ask her questions on my grammar lol!
I am sure you have things you are great at, we all have our strengths. Sadly our own language doesn't necessarily come naturally to us, it needs a fair amount of study. I would love to teach those who want to learn, history too, but it seems a lifetime of study and learning counts for nothing, only paper qualifications.
Lynibis Thank you for your non-judgemental opinion and yes, I have just spotted my bad English grammar again. I logged out to watch Tv and wash the dishes an hour ago. I should have said "I am embarrassed when I am rereading some of my past comments and spot some of my appalling English grammar". (I am hoping this is correct)
Sadly it seems social media has a lot to answer for, that and predictive text. I’ll look over my grandkids homework sometimes if they’re in mine. It really grates on me, especially if it’s my 16yr old grandson who attends grammar school, when I see silly spelling mistakes or “text speak” especially if it’s meant to be for English class. When I’ve questioned my grandson about it, he tells me teacher can’t mark you down for spelling mistakes or grammar, I asked him what was the point in teaching English anymore if they didn’t care if your English spelling or grammar was incorrect. He’s just finished his GCSEs so will be interesting to find out how he got in especially in his English language tests. He’s going back to school to do A levels but thankfully not in English because I don’t think I could cope looking at more spelling mistakes or grammar mistakes either
chele44 It's appalling isn't it, this constant dumbing down. Would we say it's ok to say 3+3 makes 5, or Paris is the capital of Belgium. Maybe they can't be marked down but teachers could still have some pride and correct them when they are wrong. I dread to see what the future holds. I suppose AI will do it all but someone has to input the info.
Lynibis it maddens me especially when I tell my grandkids that my great grandmother in the late 1800s was a governess who taught English to the upper classes who could afford to pay for their young kids to be educated. I tell them the poor woman will be turning in her grave after fighting for an education so she could pass her knowledge of the English language and proper grammar onto others
I guess the classic is your and you’re but most of them do annoy me to a point but I’d never correct someone really
jms19 and therein lies the problem. Obviously we wouldn't dream of correcting strangers or not too close friends, but we owe it to our kids to educate ourselves so we can then educate them. I don't understand why so many people stop learning once they leave school. I have always wanted to look up most of the stuff I have seen or heard to learn more about it.
I don’t bother on here - I would have to be awake 24/7 !
If I am around when my grandkids are doing their homework- i will check it, tell them how many grammatical errors I have found - then they get 50p for everyone they find and a lecture on the ones they can’t find. Either way, they won’t get the grammar incorrect again
And I don’t care about how errors there are in this post - have you seen the time lol xx
suevernon1968 what a brilliant idea. As I have said I often make mistakes on here but I know the grammar police won't be on my back, but when writing letters, my show reviews and my book I do take extra care.
The fact that I type the words correctly spelled and grammatically correct but my phone changes them without me knowing
ALL OF THEM.
And this attitude these days of "well can you understand them? It's fine" no, no it's not.
What I don't like are people being interviewed on the television who constantly say, 'You know' when speaking.I think I read somewhere that they say this when thinking what to say next but that doesn't fit either!
How much does she estimate drying 3 lots of washing a week costs the average household?
£101
£172
£223
This is not so much an example of bad grammar but of shoddy writing, I am sure you can see what's wrong with it?
