Perhaps on mobile we could provide an option to choose the Chat topic you want to see (as you can on desktop) and maybe create a new topic for general chit chat

Wow, that's bizarre! I never noticed the chat 'filter by topic' button on the desktop, even though it is staring me in the face.
That suggests:
a) it may need a bit of a re-design to make it more obvious / user friendly
b) I'm blind as a bat
