Squatters Take over Gordon Ramsay's London Restaurant
In the News
So this is another Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmare , but not for the same reason of his tv series
Squatters have taken over his premises , York & Albany hotel and gastropub , that is for sale at £13 million
And despite his aggressive personality and being used to get his own way , he is powerless to move them out
If it had been a residential property it would have been easier, but as a commercial one there is a long, drawn out procedure to go through
In fact if he tries to gain entry without permission it is a criminal offence and he could be prosecuted !!!
What a mad world we live in

Yes with it being commercial property it will take a while to have them evicted, he can afford it
martinlufc5637 Thats true m, he could even afford to pay them off to move, but that would just encourage more squatting
Oh that's not good, since it was a hotel maybe in hindsight it would have been better to have someone still living on the premises until sold.
At first I couldn't stop laughing when I heard about this as I do love a bit of Karma. However the news articles description of the squatters made them sound too good to be true and then it dawned on me that Gordon Ramsay's people had probably organised this for some free publicity.
EmmaWright762 Thats quite possible E, but anything involving squatters is likely to downgrade the value of the building so any free publicity would be offset by a lower price
telmel Usually I would agree, but apparently these are of the 'twee' variety, artistic and extremely respectful of the property. Only time will tell. PS Have a great day
I never understand this situation and why squatting isn't trespassing and lead to criminal prosecution. I can't get my head around it. I certainly believe there should be financial motivation so people can't have buildings unoccupied as purely investments but see no reason why random criminals can just move in and live there. I'm surprised squatter's rights hasn't been removed in law. Also its complicated legally to remove them and we don't need courts which cost huge tax payer's money being wasted on dealing with this. We need to simplify laws so can reduce court costs.
BonzoBanana Yes its a strange situation where they can squat where they want with immunity , especially in commercial properties
Its not just the occupation but the damage they cause to some buildings and the cost of the clear up afterwards
In contrast you have other laws for dropping litter , putting out your rubbish in the wrong bin, or bin in the wrong place, breaking and entering , otherwise known as burglary , etc etc where there are fines and in some cases prison sentences, but you can break into a vacant property and live there for a good length of time before being evicted with no recompense or penalties
Also squatters have a right to be connected to utilities such as gas, electricity and water, but using them without contacting the supplier first is illegal
How they manage this is a mystery to me and with the owner footing the bills !!
Its a big problem in other countries too , but there are companies you can hire there to get squatters out quicker than the court procedures
I found this article from 2021 about one such outfit in Spain , you would not want to mess with them
I dont believe this is legal in the UK though , we are too soft and just let squatters get away with it
They should be charged with trespassing, but somehow they're not.
Do what some in the U.S. do, hire fake squatters so they'll make squatters want to move out because the new squatters are intolerable. Ridiculous? Yes, though it does work.
You can't use violence so that's why.
