Stonehenge Damaged after Being Covered in Orange Spray Paint by Just Stop Oil
In the News
I have just read this article

I know that they are trying to bring attention to their cause, but I think the majority of people cant see the justification for vandalising a historic and to some a sacred monument. I hope they get the maximum sentence thrown at them
Sheer vandalism, This is absolutely disgraceful damaging historic sites. There is no excuse for such behaviour ,last month they were vandalising the cabinet that the Magna Carta in the British Library is kept in,and now this.
Mango4 I was incensed when I read this and good on the member of the public who tried to stop them, I don't know what they think the link is between art/history and their cause. It has just made me switch off to any argument they make about climate change, bunch of fanatics.
I agree with their cause but this is not the way to go about bringing attention to it. Spoiling a piece of ancient history is not the way to go about things.
Although what they did was completely wrong, it wasn't spray paint, it was orange corn flour.
Carlton1512 They say it won't hurt the monument and will gradually wash away, in the meantime it's defaced just especially before the Summer Solsist
People expelling their personal angst in an inappropriate ill purposed manner and calling it politics .It's just wanton destructive immature behavior.
Absolutely disgraceful.. how can these pathetic just stop oil protesters justify doing this.. they have no respect for anything!
I have no way of validating the claims but I saw on one of the more rightwing news channels that many of these people are unemployed claiming benefits and I would of thought the first thing to do would be to cancel their right for such payments if they commit crimes on benefits. Their should be a good behaviour clause in claiming benefits. Any conviction cancels their benefits.
BonzoBanana Stop Oil, Antifa, BLM, etc don't act alone so I doubt that's actually true.
Stop Oil says they're against oil, yet use oil products.
PhilipMarc I'm a little confused by your reply, are you saying many of these protestors aren't on benefits. If so considering how many seem to be available for protesting throughout the working day I wonder what their source of income is to enable to do that. I realise some may come from rich households and have independent income but I can only imagine that is a extremely tiny amount of people.
BonzoBanana People don't act this moronically by themselves, they're obviously hired by an organization to cause disruption and that's what's happening.
This is beyond ridiculous they're lucky no one has run them over yet.
PhilipMarc Oh I see your point is these protestors are being hired and actually paid to do what they are doing? That hadn't crossed my mind at all and I'd not seen that mentioned anywhere in the main media.
BonzoBanana The police isn't anywhere to be seen and when they are they'll protect the "protesters" rather than upholding the law.
They keep pushing people to the limit and then they'll find out the hard way.
This guy was too soft with them, but it's a start.
My patience is wearing thin at their nonstop protest and damaging just about everything. I wish the courts would come down heavy on them and send them all to prison regardless of the prisons are full or not.
Pfs I think the clean the streets idea has merit, that way they could stay true to their beliefs, as long as it's recycled, and help society. Assume the 1st part was a joke
beccatavender yes I was joking but I agree with you on cleaning the streets and gardening for the elderly who can't manage their own garden
Yeah I've just seen this on the news, stunts like this just makes me not like them, they are just vandals
When I see stunts like this it makes me angry and stops me from supporting their cause. There are other ways to bring attention to your cause.
Absolutely shocking to see this happening yesterday, pure vandalism and they should be prosecuted.
On reading the newspaper article, it is reported that one of the protestors is 73 and the other a mere 23.The older guy is from Birmingham and he should be employed clearing and tidying the streets in his own city as a punishment. The younger one is supposedly a student at Oxford. This vandalism carries with it a criminal record so the Oxford student should be barred from the University.
Wrong, just wrong which ever way you look at it. Would they do the same to St Pauls Cathedral or any other place of worship? Such an insult and possibly damaging something of value to people who would have been on their side. Idiots!
I'm pretty Henge has dealt with worth in the thousands of years it's been standing. It's some rocks fgs, and even if it was paint, not that big of a problem to remove. I'd rather they painted some rocks than ruined a priceless painting. However, I have absolutely zero time for this group at all. I'd round every one of them up at every protest and throw them in jail
I agree with much of their cause but these idiots are just causing so much damage and setting public opinion against the cause they are doing more harm than good. They should leave campaigning to the grown ups. I did see a nice social media post wondering how they would like it if someone turned up at their home and sprayed paint around their homes and damaged their belongings. Hope they get properly punished but with he mess our justice system in in I doubt it very much.
Just about had enough of them. They are just criminals in my opinion and should get criminal records and benefits stopped like the other person said. It puts me off anything to do with them at all. You don’t have to deface and vandalise everything to publicise your cause. Do it sensibly like others do.
Absolutely disgusting. Glue yourself to a fence or the road by all means but stuff like this is just wrong and out of order.
They know it will get them media exposure so the answer is to not report them on the news and get them sentenced quickly and quietly.
