Supermarkets Minimum Spend for Home Delivery

Ask a Question

I have just gone to make an online grocery order, not something, I do that often, and when I went to checkout it said that in an addition to the deliver charge there was a surcharge of £5.99 on orders under £50.

Is this a new thing ?

👋 I don't think so - there's usually a minimum order amount for home deliveries in addition to the delivery charge or a higher delivery charge for a smaller order amount. For example with Sainsbury's:

Delivery Charges

Orders under £40 will be charged £7 for standard delivery

Orders over £40 will vary between £1-£5.50

Minimum order value £25

Consumer Just goes to show, I don't do online grocery shopping on a regular basis and I must normally meet these requirements, but it was for my son, so he had some bits and pieces on return from his holidays. He lives over an hour away, so was organising a delivery for the day of his return. So, it was the first time a message has come up 🙂

beccatavender I do my online shop with Sainsburys and as Consumer says it is minimum order £40 unless you are ok paying £7. I wait until I need £40 worth and then choose a saver slot which can be as little as £1 depending on time of day. Saver slots are 4 hour windows but they do text on the morning and tell you an hour within that 4 hours.

Lynibis I normally choice the saver slots as I try to get the cheapest delivery charge. I just found myself spending more for my son's shop, buying cleaning products to make up the shortfall.

Tesco only recently the increased the minimum order to avoid a surcharge up to £50. With the way prices have gone up this year its not been difficult to get above that - and we get our deliveries every 5 days. I think it is fair - but its a hefty charge if you dont hit that limit

A proper rip off. No, this is not new. Last month I spent £5.50 and the delivery charge was £4.99! But I could have taken out a year's delivery charge costing £9.99. I have no intention of re-visiting that site again so I cut my loss. Besides their stock is so awful.

I think it depends which supermarket you were placing your order with. I think Waitrose has a minimum spend of £40 and charge £4 for delivery on that amount.
