Should Teachers Get a Pay Rise?

Ask a Question

Should teachers get a pay rise?

Some School leaders say an increase of 10% will help retain the teachers we have and help to recruit new ones to the role.

We are a bankrupt country so it will add more pressure to borrowing, yes in principle it would be nice to pay them more but you could say that about many professions and if you keep paying people more you have inflationary pressures which then makes us all poorer again. If the government increases their wages by 10% but income tax goes up a penny to pay for it then every working person becomes poorer. I feel it would be better to add some subsidies in some areas so important products like food and energy are cheaper so people become effectively richer with their existing wage. We need to lower costs in the UK so we can export more and home produced products are more competitively priced with imports. Also wage differentials are ridiculous in many areas. Maybe pay those at the bottom more but those at the top less however I'm not sure that is true of teachers I seem to remember their wage differentials were actually reasonable compared to many other government employees. However I'd be interested to see what other staff get paid like head teachers and other administrators in schools get, some of those roles have been very well paid with ridiculously generous pensions.

Everybody should get a payrise in line with inflation, rising costs and living. These days it's not just living costs and peoples ages going up lol. So why shouldn't teachers get a pay rise.

I have always found percentage payments for salary rises unfair, the best paid get more, the worse off less every time . In teaching like many professions there is a wide gap in the salaries , so maybe a set amount for all would be fairer and more cost effective. Teachers are also not the only ones that work in schools, everyone there plays a part , and all these extra staff should not be forgotten either.

All school staff should get a payrise. It's a hard job. We have kids in years 1 and 2 that still need help toileting. Where I am we have to teach kids to clean teeth and that's on top of everything else we are to do. I'm currently a class ta and 1:1. If anyone can figure out how that works please let me know. Over the years I've had chairs thrown at me, been bitten spat at and on. Kicked, punched and sworn at. Had books, shoes and other objects thrown at me.

Yes I think they should be higher paid. I appreciate all hospital staff from Consultants down are getting a better deal, so teachers should too.
