Tesco (and other supermarkets?) Substitutions

Other

My wife things I am sad that I get so excited when I get a lucky deal, but one of the benefits of getting my regular groceries from Tesco online is their substitution policy where if they cant supply a product they will offer a substitute - but at the same price as what you ordered. This can work really well when you are getting a bargain price or a multibuy deal.

A few deals recently include getting 1L of Baileys for the same reduced price as the 750ml offer they had - so my 1L was about half price!

Last week they couldnt supply a pack of two Finest chicken breasts at the offer price of £3 so gave me a packet of 4 for £3 instead - a £6 discount on the full price.

The other recent substitutions included Ribena 1.5L for the half price deal of the the 850ml bottle - over £2 save there!

Does anyone else get the same buzz as I do on these? anyone else have any good examples they managed?

Finally - is it only Tesco that offer this or does anyone else?

It is useful, but when you buy products that can't be substituted out easily (eg if you have someone in the household with an allergy and need to buy a specific product) it doesn't always work out well. I ordered rice milk, moo free chocolate and kingsmill bread to go around someone's allergy in my household. They substituted it for regular cows milk, regular chocolate and warburtons bread, making all the products unusable for what I needed. As I refused the substitutions because they weren't able to be used, this meant I then had to go out and get those products anyway. So I might as well have gone to the shop to get my groceries in the first place. And I've found that most times I've ordered online they've sent at least one unusable substitution, even with the "do not send substitutions" box ticked.

I've also had it where they didn't deliver all of my groceries to me, but rather than send the driver back with the two bags he didn't drop off, they just refunded me for the products and again I had to go to the store anyway.

Maybe I just have bad experiences with Tesco doing this, though. It sounds like you've been able to get some great bargains by ordering it that way. I guess the allergies in my household may be what causes some of the issues for me rather than the products they substitute though. I just don't like to pay for something that won't be used.

yes they dont always get the subs right and its annoying when they cant supply anything - but then to be fair its annoying when you go to the shop and they dont have it. We have had a couple of issues with Tesco over the last few years but they have always been sorted out quickly - their customer service is pretty good. I am lucky in that I have a 24 hour Asda just up the road so can always go and get something if its important.
