What Do You Think of Eating Flies as Protein ?

Other

At first you might think about eating flies or their larvae as the most disgusting thing you can think of

But did you know in Africa there are a lot of recipes that contain flies , to quote

''Kunga cake or kungu is a food dish made of densely compressed midges or flies. It is found in the African Great Lakes region, specifically countries surrounding Lake Malawi (Tanzania, Malawi, and Mozambique).''

With food shortages worldwide countries are looking at alternatives to meat and fish and looking to insect protein as a source of food in the future

In the UK we import soy beans as a food for livestock mainly from Brasil, but because of the cost etc scientists are looking for an alternative

There is a research company doing this in the |UK and i have attached a very interesting video showing them breeding the common house fly and extracting the protein for livestock feed , it is even edible for humans

So in the future who knows, instead of complaining to the waiter, 'Hey, there is a fly in my soup' , you might be complaining there are not enough

I have seen this on YouTube before and i think it’s out of necessity as they can’t taste good. Wouldn’t fancy it myself but have to be thankful i’m not in a position to have to eat flies

No thank you. Flies are so dirty. They literally fly around and land on poop. Not for me at all

When you see the poor people of Africa when there is a famine happening there always seems plenty of flies about. Surely eating flies is a matter of desperation however I do know that it has been calculated that the average american eats about 2lbs of flies and insects per year. That is flies and insects swallowed by mistake i.e. sleeping plus there is a certain amount of insect parts allowed in processed food we buy. Here is one example;

Every 16-ounce box of spaghetti can have 450 insect parts and nine rodent hairs. And a 16-ounce jar of tomato sauce can have two whole maggots.

2lbs of insect parts over a 80 year lifespan is of course 160lbs so basically that is close to the average weight of a man or woman so you could say you eat your own weight in insects over your lifespan.

Not sure about flies, but I’ve had other critters that were perfectly edible (when seasoned well and deep fried)
