Do You Think some European Countries Are Discouraging Tourists ?

Ask a Question

To me it seems they are shooting themselves in the foot

Ok i understand places like Tenerife and Magaluf for instance, they are fed up of the hooligan Brit boozers who just go their to drink and cause fights and damage

But taxing people to enter a city like Venice to me is taking things a bit too far

Yes , they are overrun with tourists , but they are making lots of money from it and it is not cheap to eat or drink there and the attractions are expensive , i have been a few times myself

Imagine if all countries adopted this, it would just be another tax to increase prices for holidaymakers

Would you be happy with this extra cost , albeit it is a small amount ?

I have seen a lot in the news recently that Tenerife has had enough of tourists but like you say a lot of countries would not survive without tourism. During Covid many Caribbean islands struggled to survive.

LOL, people have been taxed to stay in Venice for years. You pay a tax at the hotel or place you stay. I think we paid £5 per night. This is just a new tax for day trippers in the hope of detering large groups who tend to be more troublesome and otherwise avoid paying tax.

Surely tourism is the backbone of their economy, how much is it going to cost to enter Venice, we went years ago, it wasn't that great to be honest, I wouldn't return

martinlufc5637 Yes i found it expensive , if you drink a coffee in the main square , St. Mark's Square (Piazza San Marco), you could be charged £15 or more , probably more now

The experts also warn against going to a restaurant with no prices showing, they have a few there and you would get a shock when you asked for the bill

telmel yeah I remember back then how expensive it was, you can only imagine the prices now, we just holiday in turkey now, were off in 4 weeks, can't wait to feel warm again lol

It's great for the UK economy and the global environment if less people decide to travel due to higher prices abroad. However I guess they will simply choose somewhere else to go. Venice is under threat due to rising sea levels which I'm sure they will eventually lose to and Venice will be mainly gone. If you want to see it perhaps we are in the last decades where it will exist. This image shows where Italy's coast line is vulnerable to rising sea levels but doesn't show the expected ingress inland of the rising water level but does show a huge amount of Italy's coast is vulnerable.

BonzoBanana More reason to encourage tourism now while they are still above water B and rake in the profits

Nobody will want to go there in a few years time if they have to wear a snorkel and flippers to sight see 😉

telmel Actually now you mention it you do get holidays where people go diving to ship wrecks etc. Maybe that will be a future holiday for Venice with people diving to see the old buildings of Venice. Although thinking about it if parts of Venice are still populated with all the sewage sent straight into the water as per normal then perhaps I wouldn't want to go on a diving holiday there.

BonzoBanana Thats another thing B, people have been complaining about the stench coming from the waterways over the last few years, probably amplified by the rise in temperatures , so another reason not to go where we are not welcome

telmel I feel like we are welcome they just want to make even more money out of us as they have huge costs to pay. My typical approach to holidays is get a last minute deal for peanuts and spend as little money as possible while there as long as it doesn't compromise the enjoyment of the holiday. I'm quite happy to buy food from local supermarkets rather than dine in expensive restaurants. I've heard it's better value to get a hotel just outside Venice on the mainland and just commute in to see Venice. It can save a fortune plus many hotels in Venice are terrible. Venice is more a novelty than anything else I think.

The debt level of Italy is horrific. The ratio of government debt to GDP is much higher than our own. They too may face defaulting on their interest payments in fact I think its more likely they will than we will. It's just the madness of the EU with so many indebted nations just piling on the debt year by year rather than sorting their economies. More utterly useless politicians who are clueless to what they are doing.

I think in a lot of cases these sort of stories are blown out of proportion and the papers just latch onto it.

Wherever i’ve been i’ve mostly felt more than welcome. As long as you show a bit of respect people are generally pleased to see people interested in their culture.

I think the Venice charges are not high and will not deter tourists. In fact with it being a large cruise port they will make millions every week. They are spending huge amounts to lift the buildings as the whole city is sinking.
