Ask a Question

Garry Glitter has just lost his fight for parole. Having all the money he has got do you think he should pay for his food and board.

Yes I do. When he get out he will still have all his money plus interest paid. And do it again.

Of course not, it’s not place of choice. Rich MPs, Lords, celebrities do not want to be in prison.

Yes I think assets should be seized when someone is in jail for such an offence. The reason this doesn't happen is politicians are always taking back handers etc and don't want to risk this happening to themselves but the huge costs of taking someone to prison should be on the criminals as much as possible. Even if that means the family of the criminal becomes homeless especially if their home was funded by theft and corruption. This would be a huge deterrent to crime if all their gains were at risk. Of course it would also mean innocent relatives would not get their inheritance if the assets seized ended up being all their assets. I mean prison costs per year especially someone in isolation is huge and the cost of going through the court system is huge too then you add the time and money in collecting evidence etc would be a large sum. I wouldn't be against all those costs being factored in. However again if the police may pursue richer criminals in preference to poorer criminals so there must be processes in place to protect against that. Like everyone the police are getting more and more under-resourced.

I personally don't think the funds should go directly to their victims generally because this will lead to many false claims. There should be a general compensation system. I certainly don't see why a person raped by a poor person should get less than someone raped by a rich person. It should be a standard amount otherwise we will have many false claims against rich people.

I guess you would have to wait for all the legal processes to be exhausted before you could use these assets although they could be immediately seized and frozen.

Ultimately as we continue on our road to becoming a much poorer country we will have to think about how we raise more funds for institutions like the prison service. In the US the prison population is used as basically slave labour. The money they make is often used to pay court costs, provide basic luxuries in prison etc. China does the same but on a much darker level with prisoner organs also being removed. I seem to remember there was product in Tesco, christmas card or something with a message from a Chinese prisoner saying 'please help us' or similar. It's a horrible path to go down but we have to be realistic about our debt level and what we can afford.

I believe it is a choice as criminals know they have broken the law and choose to do it. I feel that anyone who has pots of money from illegal gain should be made to pay for their keep, on top of compensating their victims. Controversial but I also feel those not on benefits should pay a moderate daily fee for hospital stays when saving on food and energy costs.

Lynibis so people on benefits will save their benefits if in hospital?

Saver1 well people on benefits are usually at a disadvantage anyway (if not earning on the side) so it may help them to get ahead a little.

Lynibis so your advocating that a person who has paid into the system all their life should pay for food and bed if admitted to hospital and some people who have sponged all their life ( and I know a few ) don’t .

Saver1 you are twisting my words and being confrontational, it is just one of those thoughts that may help the nhs survive, I am not a politician and not every thought I have would be viable. I am only human, just like you.

Lynibis why not go the whole hog and make them pay for their treatment? They have most probably paid taxes and NI contributions all their working lives.

Pjran gosh is it get at Lynn day? I made no such suggestion as we pay N.I. for that, but it is a shame that a large percentage of it goes on food which they would have to pay for if at home. I am not well heeled but I would be more than happy to pay £10 per day. Everyone moans about the state of society etc these days but no one seems willing (especially the super rich) to help or volunteer to improve things.

Lynibis people who are on benefit and in hospital are meant to report this so they're money goes towards the nhs sorry to say this tho but people wouldn't say they was in hospital to get the benefits stopped as they still have to pay their bills to have a home to go back to

Leannexxx thanks for that, I didn't know and am always open to being corrected. Actually if that is the case then I guess others could contribute too, I am sure many would, if only voluntarily.

Lynibis that’s fine about the super rich. You only mentioned people on benefits not to pay Not the normal hard working family who probably get less working then on benefits.
