Do You Think School Trips Are Expensive?

My grandson is going on a school trip skiing . The cost is £1800. The family has all contributed to let him go but it’s so expensive for parents to do this.
There is another trip to a African country and that is a whopping £3800. This is crazy money
Your thoughts please.
I am wondering whether this is a private school or state school? But regardless of that it's strange when schools know how hard it is for families struggling out there that they organise such expensive trips? Madness!
tumblespots Not a private school. It’s a Academy and they have done skiing trips for at least 40 years. I Just think that they could do cheaper trips. My grandson has saved as well . Got a per job, washing pots in a local restaurant and doing gardening and cleaning cars.
There are a lot of farmers children in the school who go.

Absolutely yes, 1 week in France nearly £1100 for my daughter, we can have a family for that amount
This is complete madness. How on earth can families afford these trips. They are separating the rich from the poor. That was whole idea of school uniforms so everyone is the same.
eyeballkerry It is and he is very lucky that he has two sets of grandparents and great grandmothers to pay. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been able to go. I wouldn’t have been able to afford it for my kids.
Wow that’s some amount of money but will be a wonderful experience for ur grandson. He obviously realises the expense of it too and has shown willing to contribute towards it also by getting himself some part time jobs but I personally think it’s too expensive. I was single parent bringing up 4 kids who were all at grammar school together at 1 stage. Took me everything just to afford their uniforms and school fees each term. If they’d have had holidays like that thrown in also there’s no way any of them would have been able to go, even at half that price. My grandsons going camping in Jersey for wk in August with local scout troop. Everything’s included, flights, food etc and it’s costing £400 but is being subsidised so parents only pay £200 which I think is fantastic price
Yes they are. It's ridiculous. The pressure to do the trips as well. Mine aren't allowed to leave the country because of cost. I'd love to let mine go but we wouldn't have a family holiday uf we dud let them
Yes they do seem to be very pricey and I think schools should really consider if the trips are affordable for all before they plan them. As a teenager it can be pretty upsetting to not be able to go on a trip that your friends are going on.

I missed out on every school trip because my mother and father never gave me any spending money.

Felt really left out and embarrassed in the 1980s.

Paulyousef28 I was lucky and my parents saved up for school trips for both my sister and I. My husband wasn’t as lucky and had to pay board when doing in a milk round when he was twelve. He never got presents for birthdays or Christmas.
Yes . Because your paying for the teachers helpers too.

Yes, these trips are expensive. They're by no means mandatory/ compulsory. There have been / are trips to Africa, the Far East, Belgium, Italy, Skiing, etc. And yes, State School. But we haven't signed on for any of these over the years. Our children have the choice but have said it's better we do something as a family!
LHP118 What lovely children you have got. It brings tears to my eyes your children are not fussed by this overpriced nonsense called learning about another culture by going there, etc. When I was a schoolgirl, we had yearly educational trip to places such as Wales (geography), Windsor Castle (history), Food manufacturing or career in Food (home economics) Theatre (English literature) and so on. It wasn't cheap but I could afford to pay for it all myself out of my pocket money rather than asked my parents to paid for them.

It's different for different families, parents and children, of course. There's no better or right way in this. We live in very different times and expectations as well.
My children have travelled (abroad) when they were younger, and been on school (usually day) trips. We've travelled across the UK on road trips to visit family ever so often so they are well-travelled. They've got it in their heads that we can have a road trip down to Brighton-Hove to see family friends, then across to Cornwall and Devon ... on our next adventure as a family. Perhaps Belgium and France on another! We'll have to wait and see.
Yet, they refuse school coach / plane trips.

julie781x As far as im aware it was all inclusive. Maybe its because a lot of students were going, I don't know as he didn't go on trip.
Wow I was upset that a 1 night trip 30 minutes away cost £80. They say you don't have to but you don't want your child being the only one not going
That is an expensive school trip. The most expensive one that our pupils go on is £500 and I think that is expensive. If you are able to afford to send them then I think it is brilliant but it is not compulsory.
