Do You Throw Salt over Your Left Shoulder?
Ask a Question
I don’t know where I got this superstition from but I always do this if for some reason if I have excess salt in my hand. Not sure why really, just a bad luck thing I think.
I was told it's meant to stop your bad luck it's the left shoulder because it's the devil's side I've done it for years and still had no luck
I use to throw salt over my shoulder if l spilt some but as I've got older l don't believe in any superstition, hence...l walk under ladders, sew on sundays, cross knives, and will dry an open umbrella indoors
Pinkspirit Oh no. I don’t walk under ladders, can hardly sew anyway, don’t put up umbrellas indoors. I accidentally crossed my knife tonight though. . Husband doesn’t cut nails on a Sunday but that’s never bothered me. I don’t cross on the stairs at home either. I think that’s it. .
Pinkspirit I didn't know you weren't supposed to sew on Sundays. I've been sewing stuff on Sundays for years.
MrsCraig l was always told by my mum, but then again she could of just made it up
Pinkspirit it's not one that I have heard of before. My Granny was one for superstitions but that wasn't one that she told me. Interesting though
I always throw a bit of salt over my left shoulder every time I'm using salt for cooking,I make sure I have my back to the sink so it catch it!
I'm superstitious about Umbrellas opened in the home, never heard the one about cutting nails/sewing on Sunday!
Always brought up not to cross my knife & fork as it's bad luck by my English Mum,I don't think my Southern Irish Dad followed any superstitions!
janphoenix51 Thats a good idea throwing it backwards into the sink J
If you throw it on the floor you might skid on it and have an accident, then the salt wont be so lucky
I do it occasionally if i have too much salt from cooking or whatever but in general no I dont
I seem to have continued all my grandparents superstitions- the salt, stairs, ladders, umbrellas. Also if possible if you go into a house through the front door you are supposed to leave by the back door.
suevernon1968 id never heard this one, maybe that's my problem, I don't use my front door at all
Yes same as. I learnt this from my Mum who got it from hers but not sure where it came from in the first place
No I can't say that I've ever done it, I don't believe in superstition, you make your own luck in life
