Do You Tip When You Eat Out?

Ask a Question

🍴 Do you tip when you eat out?

Here in the UK, a lot of us don't tip at all but it's seen as the norm in the US.

We went out for a meal on Saturday with friends and when paying the bill they had already put on a service charge. The service wasn’t good so we wouldn’t have left such a big tip.

Pjran Adding a service charge to the receipt makes a difference I think

Pjran You can ask for the service charge to be removed and you can then pay as appropriate

tonygch96 that would be too embarrassing.

Not usually. Also depends if service charge included. Otherwise, only if I feel I have had good service, then I would.

I work in pub restaurant and I do my best to serve the customers, but don’t always get tipped. I don’t expect it so when I do get tipped it is a nice surprise. It is weird why we tip certain industries and not others. Restaurants, hairdresser, taxi drivers, hotel staff etc. I would love to be able tip hospital staff. I do send a card sometimes and have started a charity on go for fund me for Kings College hospital as they saved my father in law life. Absolutely amazing, they deserve more than other industries.

I tip for meals out but fairly minimal tips I guess but never tip for takeaway deliveries which many do. If I tip its always a cash amount left on the table.

Rarely. The addition of an added service charge and often a charity donation to most bills turns me off tipping.

I don't tend to tip normally unless it truly is an amazing service, if they have gone out their way doing so. I personally think they should be paid more but not from tips but from the company. This is the same feeling for deliveroo etc. My wife on the other hand will tip everyone even if it's shocking service etc.. does my head in

Absolutely I do. Especially if the service is good, sadly in these kind of jobs the pay is always low . It's nice to put a smile on someone's face and know they really appreciate it 😊. We tip between £5 and £10

yeh we are in the uk and usually try to tip 10% unless its really bad service then we wont tip as that is what a tip is for isnt it rewarding good service.

I work In Hospitality and the clients that visit always tip the bar staff. I don’t work In the bar but the staff who does tells me about what they received. It’s different In the US. 15-20% is mandatory if a service charge is not included. It differs from job to job. Fast food you don’t normally tip. If the service is good and they went above and beyond here in the UK then yes I would.

I guess it all depends on where we eat out, some places I do and others I don't.

HEDGEHOGS Why do you tend to tip at some places and not others? Do you feel you get better service at some?

SamGoodship A couple of times a year we treat ourselves to a special date night at one of our local restaurants, not a chain but family run, the food and welcome is amazing and we are well looked after and for this we feel a tip it appropriate. 🥰 If we eat at a chain then usually it is a different experience and what I call "you pay for what you get" even though it is usually still ok, food it normally brought to us and you don't get to see the waiter/waitress again and leave with dishes still on the table so for this reason we don't always tip in these places unless someone has specifically gone above and beyond to look after us 👍.

I'm sure I read that the reason tipping is pretty much compulsory in the USA is cause their wages alone aren't really enough to live on. The minimum wage in a lot of US states is very low. In this country cause we have a national min wage (that in theory should be enough to live on) then tipping isn't as expected.

I do tip if it's a large party or I've had exceptional service but in general I don't.

If there isn't a service charge then yes I always tip.

Wouldn't tip if the food/service was bad though, fortunately I haven't had that experience yet.

If there's a Service charge then no unless their food was amazing. Takeaway I don't usually tip but for dine-ins I do.

I do, because I feel compelled to do so. Although I know they are low paid I am too and I do resent giving tips to those who probably earn same or more than me. A taxi driver I worked with once mentioned what he earned in a good week and it was more than I earn in a month! So glad I don't have to use taxis or I would really feel bad having to tip.

We don't eat out that often but when we do we don't usually tip. I actually dislike it when they put a service charge on the bill as it should bemy choice if I tip or not. If we have had great service we will tip, but never more than £3.
