Tipping Hairdressers?

Ask a Question

Should you tip your Hairdresser/Barber?

Do you think after paying for the service you should tip on top or maybe you feel that you are paying enough?

Leannexxx it is very odd indeed, i thought I was going mad when i saw the same topics just reposted again word for word. It’s not really very helpful tbh cause i think if anything it stops people interacting

I always tip my hairdresser Sarah who has done mine, my daughter & my two sisters hair & their children & grandchildren's hair.

Sarah IS a family favorite so deserves a tip..

We cut our own hair so haven't paid a hairdresser for about 9 years for me, 5 for my husband and son. My husband used to tip a pound or 2, if the haircut was £8 he would give £10 and tell them to keep the change but he never tipped more than a few pound.

I gave my hairdresser a tip last week. Take your holidays in the Canaries I suggested.

A better question might be… is tipping healthy motivation to reward acceptable or good performance or should employers who encourage tips in order to pay staff less than they’re worth be ostracised?

nomiso most hairdresser are self employed so I think tips are good for them

Leannexxx But do you tip the checkout person at the supermarket?

The mechanic that fixes your car? The plumber? the builder?

The list goes on and on. No because they are already paid a wage.

If I was to go for a haircut and a shave then that would cost me about £20 which is expensive enough so am sure the tip is included in there.

I can't afford a separate tip after that

Paulyousef28 I think that's expensive for a clipper job I'm sure you could do it yourself

Leannexxx exactly that's why since they closed in lockdown I do my own hair and shave.

I just went once to ask 2 different hairdressers how much they charging now.

Actually am shaving my own head and face tomorrow

I dont get my haircut all that often, probably once a year (because of the cost and I dislike the social interaction honestly) but usually i will leave a small tip, only £5 but I assume theres lots of people like me who do not have their hair regularly done so every little helps

My friend has a friend who got a phone call from her hairdresser cancelling her upcoming appointment saying that priority from now on would be given to clients who leave tips after each visit.

The friend was a non tipper!!!

Auntielettie I hope they go bankrupt!!

I thought tips were like donations.........not compulsory and a added bonus.

Auntielettie that’s terrible behaviour to treat clients that way. No doubt your friend has been a regular customer in the past, hope she doesn’t go back.

Hairdressers like a lot of others in the service industry the pay is low. The job is hard. You have to be happy all the time even if you aren't happy. You're on your feet all day. You have to look perfect. And the money is rubbish. Yes the employeers should pay more but they don't so yes tip

I always tip hairdressers. I simply don't believe they won't get any joy from my money if they didn't do a good job.

I believe you pay for services in the price a tip is extra so sure if you're happy can afford it and want to tip them they'll be greatfull and it's a nice thing to do but if you can't afford it or don't want to then don't. Tips shouldn't be expected or forced but as an option to show your appreciation if you can and want to
