'To Refrigerate or Not to Refrigerate , That is the Question' , Eggs That is ?
Ask a Question
TV chef James Martin has spoken out about the age old question, should eggs be stored in the fridge ?
I always do , but i was surprised by the reason you shouldn't
He says the shells are porous , so they absorb the smells of all other things in there, like garlic or strong cheeses
And that affects the quality of the eggs
But the flipside to this is that storing them in the fridge extends their life , especially in warmer weather
What do you do with yours ?

Store mine in fridge as they do last longer. I rarely have stinky cheese or garlic anyway so not a problem.
martinlufc5637 Same here M, i suppose if you rewrap them in clingfilm after opening that might stop them absorbing smells ?
martinlufc5637 yep, that's right.
I still store them in the refrigerator as I've done it for years.
I always keep mine in the fridge and they do keep a lot longer. I take them out the night before ready to boil.
Never put them in the fridge. In America they are meant to be jn the fridge because of something they do them before being sold
This is a question I have always asked as their not in the fridge when you buy them in the shops! But out of habbit I have always stored mine in the fridge .
I do store mine in the fridge but take them out to get to room temperature first when making cakes etc. But use them straight from the fridge when making scrambled eggs, frying or poaching.
I store them out of the fridge. If they were chilled when you buy them then yes but they are not chilled. Keep them In the original box too.
Personal preference I guess. I used to keep in the fridge but now in a cupboard and they don't last long enough to need them to last longer!
We don’t keep ours in the fridge. We use so many eggs that they rarely have a chance to go out of date. And if they do then we use them past their best before date anyway, just give them a sniff first.
snoogans888...Or put them in a jug of water,if they float to the top they are no good to use, this is the method my family have always used..
snoogans888 I do find it odd how so many people find eggs last longer in the fridge - they last quite a long time (a few wks?) in the first place without the fridge (I'm trying to google but it's telling me 2hrs ) , so wouldn't you have eaten them all before then - or that you're buying more than you need.
I think other countries do need to refrigerate their eggs since the eggs are sterilised before they get to shops, so they're sold from fridges, too. So places like Japan / Taiwan often eat raw eggs.
This is an interesting article that states America literally gives them a dub and scrub hot bath, compromising the egg shell:
janphoenix51 ah yes I always forget that method! And I normally can’t remember if a bad egg sinks or floats. That’s why I just use my nose.
hky the eggs we’ve bought have always had a long shelf life.
yes I have read before other countries have very different ways of processing their eggs so they have to store them differently.
snoogans888 ...A bad egg would float to the top,I test my eggs this way,if they stay on the bottom I use them up..
This is really odd as a few years ago we were told not to store in the fridge and everyone was asking why we had the egg holder in the fridge door, now when you google it says store in the fridge.
Used to keep chooks and never kept eggs in fridge, they aren't in fridge in supermarket nor are they transported in refrigerated vehicles. Farmers keep them in cool rooms and it usually takes 3 - 10 days to get them to supermarket depending on the size of egg production unit.
Have never refrigerated eggs across all UK seasons. Never had an issue. Egg’s aren’t refrigerated in shops so why refrigerate them at home?
Used to keep in the fridge but stopped a few months ago.I buy and eat em within days but not every week.
No never have, always check my eggs before using them though, put them in a jug of water, if they and up or float they are no good
I like storing them in the refrigerator, it's just a habit of mine.
Apparently, I hold the spoon in an unusual way so hey, we all have our own ways.
Ah good chat topic!
I saw ages ago on tv that it’s best to store them in middle section of the fridge to be honest anywhere is fine lol
Except the area at the top of fridge where it has those egg trays at the door is bad cause you open it a lot causes them to go off
