Do You Have a Trusted Tradesperson You Always Use

Ask a Question

My plumber is a treasure and i have used his services for about 11 years now. He is honest, reliable and always charges less than i anticipate. One time he came out to quickly check a small problem and would not accept any payment but took some tomato plants. Next time i saw him he said his wife was well pleased as they had a bumper crop🍅🍅🍅

I dread the day he retires but he said he would probably pop out to do the odd small job.

I do most jobs myself, those I can't do or don't want to do, I ask a family friend, he's retired and does odd jobs for very little money

martinlufc5637 that's ideal. I am sure my plumber will do the same when retired. My sons are very protective of me but both of them have had work done by him and been very impressed, also my best friend. If you are good word soon gets round.

We always use the same electrician and plumber. Both are absolutely brilliant and don't charge you a fortune. I always recommend them if someone is looking for a tradesperson.

telmel my son is remarkable at DIY but he does so many things for me and has his own house to maintain so I only ask him to do little jobs and certainly not those that need a certificate, which he wouldn't anyway.

MrsCraig Lucky you. I have used electricians and plumbers in the past both "vetted" by a local political party leaflet and a local trade magazine and both tradesmen were either cowboys and/or ripped me off. I had to ask my neighbours or the local DIY shop to recommend a tradesman to rectify the shoddy work done.

jam45 I did research before I picked both. Asked a number of neighbours, friends who lived in the area and the local trusted trade peoples fb page. I also knew what kind of price I should be paying an hour based on tradespeople prices in our previous area.

We had our kitchen cupboard units, hob & extractor fan all fitted by A check A Trade guy....shoddy work, he said he was more than happy to pay to advertise in said booklet as he could easily make the money back...Its so hard finding decent trades people

Pinkspirit This confession by a "cowboy" tradesman explains why vetting some people is sometimes worthless.

jam45 totally agree, l would prefer to be recommended someone by someone l know and that l can actually see their work for myself in their home.

My mother recently had some tiles dislodged on her roof and had lots of very high quotes for refitting them and many wanted to erect scaffolding to do the job and had high quotes of course because of erecting scaffolding. I'm certainly not going up on a roof like that. However in the end went for a cheap quote where the person literally just used a normal ladder and did the job in a more risky way. Health and safety rules were probably not followed but the tiles were refitted. I don't know what to think about that, a huge saving in price but someone risking their own safety to do so.

I am fortunate enough that my husband can do most diy jobs, if it’s broken he will try and fix it, if we need a change of decor, he will do it. Nothing fazes him.

jam45 I am very lucky that my husband does this. He also helps the family out. Worked out the other day he fixes and mends in seven properties which includes a pub.

eyeballkerry I am hoping your husband is not doing these jobs free of charge for example the pub which itself is a proper business. Some people like to take advantage of a nice person hospitality and abuse it.

jam45 I am not very good at knowing if someone is joking or not but if you truly don't get it...she is saying her dad is her trusted tradesperson lol. But of course you still need professionals for the serious stuff.

Lynibis Thanks for the enlightenment. I was talking about cowboy tradesmen or people taking advantage of a kindhearted person's hospitality.

jjs1985 Same here and it is such a relief isn't it? They are worth their weight in gold. Feel for those who get lumbered with cowboys.
