Two Drinks in a Restaurant Bar in Greece Cost £690

In the News

Be careful if you are dining out in Greece , the price of the drinks could give you a heart attack

This particular one, an oyster bar, charged a couple from the USA £690 for two drinks

Unfortunately they didn't check the bill until they had got home

They did get free use of the sunbeds though !

Another trick is to put the price of the seafood by weight

So you could see a portion of crabs legs for £20 and get a bill for £80 , not realising it was £20 per 100 gms

It might be a good idea to check your glasses prescription is up to date and you haven't had too much to drink before ordering , or you could end up short changed

Yeah this is a big warning to anyone going on holiday, check the prices and check your bill, when we were in turkey recently some bars tried every trick in the book to overcharge

I'd never shop anywhere with hidden pricing but I guess could get caught out with manipulative pricing where you assume pricing is per normal but could actually be by weight and extremely expensive.

The owners were rubbing their hands all the way to the bank, and I thought it was only rip off Britain. That was probably a day's profit!

Omg that's awful. Good to know for when we go away. People assume tourists have money but a lot of us work hard and save money to go away and can't afford to be ripped off

JLouM Just thinking about all the hassle to get there using air ports and then the huge expense and when you do get there you are exposed to heat levels close to 40 degrees Celsius. Sounds like a nightmare to me. My preferred summer temperatures are from about 20 to 25 degrees. If I went to Greece it would probably have to be spring or autumn I guess to get the temperatures I wanted which would be a lot cheaper I hope and perhaps less busy at the air ports so less hassle.

BonzoBanana Agreed. I once went to Rhodes (about 20 yrs ago now mind) but it was a travel agency ‘deal’. Immediately regretted it once there. It was self catering, no air con and the power kept cutting out. Trying to keep things in fridge!! No paper allowed down toilet. Just a bin. Imagine in the heat! We were in cold shower when we could. Bought huge gallons of drinking water from shop - so heavy! That was where we stayed. Out and about at bus stop young couple with new baby spoke to us said just got here but have to go home tomorrow it’s just too hot. My husband got heatstroke in Lindos and was physically sick and ran out of drinking water. Luckily kind American woman gave him some. It was my holiday from hell and I’m never going back! 😅

BonzoBanana I agree B, with the rising temperatures it has to be winter only for me when i can afford it

I just feel sorry for families tied to the school holidays

telmel If I was going abroad it would definitely be leaving the UK in the winter months to enjoy somewhere warm out of season. I can't see the point of a summer foreign holiday when we are getting decent weather at home. It will help boost the vitamin D levels too for the winter in a natural way. If I won the lottery I would probably have a house somewhere I could go in the winter. Not sure where that would be though, maybe New Zealand as their temperatures are meant to be the reverse of ours, our winter becomes their summer I think.

BonzoBanana I was lucky enough to go to New Zealand B, ironically through a competition i won here , it was just the air fares and transport around , it didn't include accommodation or food, but some was subsidised

It's a beautiful country but not without it's problems , not that i saw them as a tourist and they were not so prevalent when i was there

telmel Watched quite a few videos about New Zealand but never been there. Some of the countryside looks as beautiful as the UK though which again I guess is down to a similar climate. It's not one of those brown countries where all you can see is earth and sand and most plants are really struggling to survive due to lack of water. I watched a video about a UK cyclist who lives in Spain and the world seems so dry and most people seem to stay indoors due to the heat. I'm not built for a climate like that. Celtic stock with white skin and blue eyes and veins deeper below the skin compared to people adapted to a hot climate.

Always check the price on anything before ordering, especially alcohol if you've already been drinking. The golden rule for pricing on any item is that if it doesn't have a price tag, you can't afford it. Especially true of the shops in Monaco.

Fitchet The way global warming is going hotter weather is coming to us anyway along with a huge number of migrants trying to get away from nightmare heat levels. I know someone who moved from Australia to the UK and one of the reasons was he was fed up with the heat and having to smell obese sweating men all the time, his words not mine. He had a light ginger complexion though which is not ideal for dealing with heat.

I'm down in the south west and generally I find the temperatures a little bit below what would be ideal temperatures for me. It's a beautiful area though and love it in the summer, spring and autumn, not keen on winter weather though.

This happens abroad at times and yeah everyone has to be careful. Personally if i went to a restaurant and they tried to charge me that i would walk away without paying.

jms19 Its depends which country you were in J, in some if they don't come after you with a meat cleaver they might call the police

The police would probably have more sympathy with the restaurant than with English holidaymakers , especially with our reputation

telmel i’d like to think in Greece they would be reasonable because they rely so much on tourism. I saw a story like this that happened to tourists in Venice and the mayor of Venice personally got the money back from the restaurant for the tourists.

telmel yeah these crooks try to intimidate tourists, i’ve had it myself in several countries (been threatened with family curses, being beaten up etc) but i always just so ok and walk away.

It is a little scary tbh but Ive been ok so far.

There are places in Mykonos where super rich goes. It's hardly any news, but Americans clearly knew what place they went and it's an expensive bar.

Unfortunately it's another case of champagne taste and lemonade money.

SebK84 Lucky for me I have lemonade money and actually prefer lemonade. I don't like wine or champagne. I remember in the past someone boasting about the fact they got a cheap holiday but then when they explained how much they had spent there on top of the holiday costs it was many thousands of pounds. Then they said they would be paying off these bills for the next 8 months which made me think they would be paying interest on top. Some people seem to go on holiday which a gung-ho approach to spending money and enjoying themselves. I couldn't do that myself I'd think about all the bills to come I'd have to reign it in a bit.

I hate being ripped off. 10 years ago in Rome my friend wanted a coffee but when I saw the price I refused and told her I would sit with her while she had one. It was £20, I did feel mean.
