University Challenge Contestants Think the UK is Still Part of the EU

In the News

So these are students from two of the best universities in the UK, one being Trinity College, Cambridge

Heaven help us

They were asked to name the two countries that are members of both the EU and the Commonwealth

One said Britain and Malta and when told no, another said UK and Cyprus, both forgot Brexit despite it being rammed down our throats since 2016

These could be our future politicians , i suppose that says it all !!

Thank goodness they weren't asked the capitals of the UK , then they would have struggled

I think it is a misconception to believe that University Students are all super intelligent although they certainly are very knowledgeable on some subjects, but, there are many kinds of intelligence. Common sense and life knowledge are both very under valued and when you consider that most of our politicians have been through university, you can count the politicians with common sense on one hand! Your topic just highlights their lack of general knowledge!

tumblespots I think its the lack of common sense that makes them stand out T, as you said

Lets hope neither of these two are studying politics at uni , if so we really need to start worrying

tumblespots so true. Watch any quiz show and it is usually doctors, lawyers and the so called intelligentsia who do badly. Comedians seem to do best. I have spent my whole life studying history and feel confident enough to say I probably know significantly more on the subject than most history teachers, but I would not be hired to teach and all that knowledge is wasted! I left school just before my 16th birthday.

Lynibis I agree, it would be people like you who could benefit the children more with all that learned knowledge rather than someone who only studied just enough to pass an exam in order to teach!

Those contestants are under a lot of pressure and should be forgiven for a mistake. They are far more knowledgeable than me.

Pjran But the ones picked to go on the show are supposed to be the best of the best P, and should be able to perform under pressure

And the fact two of them gave the same wrong answer is astoundingly bad

Maybe they should apply to go on The Chase instead, you can get away with blunders on that show 😀

I must admit I learn stuff I'm interested in a lot easier than stuff I'm not interested in. I watch a lot of quiz shows and they ask a lot of questions about the monarchy of the past and I just can't take in that information as have zero interest in the monarchy of the past or today even. I'm interested in economics but not politicians so much. I think most of us learn more with regard the subjects we are interested in. I've watched the Chase and seen people that work in supermarkets stacking shelves do really well and teachers and doctors do really badly. I would expect someone educated at Cambridge to have good all round knowledge but I'm not surprised when they don't. I mean the time some students have to put to their studies is huge for example a doctor and this would reduce time to learn more casual general information.

Goodness - every adult at least should know this. And they are supposed to be highly educated 🤣🙄
