Do You Visit the Library?
Ask a Question
When is the last time you visited the Library?
We try to go every two weeks with our little one and pick him out some new books for us to read together.
I did used to go fairly regularly to my local library, that was until they moved loads of the books to the back so they could put a cafe in there. Now if i want a book that i can’t find myself (which seems to be fairly common) i have to pay a fee (only 50pish) and wait a week for the book to be picked from the back for me.
Took too long for me so i just stopped bothering
SamGoodship yeah but someone has to go and find the book in the back which seems to take a few days so you have to reserve it.
I must admit I never go to borrow books as I get all my books quite cheaply on kindle. However, I do go to various events in our huge library, called The Forum, for author talks and baby play and book time with granddaughter and great grandson. I am going for a talk on pirates on 26th and the following week all about the witchfinder General and his persecution of witches in East Anglia.
Lynibis Wow! what an interesting life you are living. I really am jealous of your intellect. I use the library mainly for printing, photocopying and borrowing silly books like biographies of the rich and famous. Occasionally a geography or history if I am going to enter a competition that I do not know the answer to.
jam45 that is so very kind of you but believe me I am just an average person who happens to love history and English and when you love a subject you tend to study it. When I retired I sunk into a depression thinking 'is this it?' But luckily my son gave me a good talking to and said that I have to go out and live not wait for a knock on the door.
I began giving history talks to an Age UK group, this led to me joining their weekly club. I force myself to attend talks because it gets me out and making friends. I have been writing a pirate book for many years so the talk I mentioned will be helpful. Through the club I have been invited to dinner dances they go to and I have realised how right my son was. I now grab every opportunity but of course I am lucky in my time is mine and I have no dependents. I urge anyone reading this, if you live alone and are lonely....go grab life!
Lynibis ...Well done to you & also your son..
My partner's eldest sister J turned 81 five days ago in Portadown, near Belfast. When we visited her a few years ago on holiday we called into her local Library in the centre of Portadown where she proudly showed us her work which they had on display. Our J had knitted characters , market stalls containing fruit & vegetables & other items.
Recently she befriended a young lady in the Library who was in her 20's showing her how to knit a Teddy Bear for her Autistic relative ..
Our J LOVES & supports her Library , she can turn her hand to so many crafts, croquets, knits , does cross stitch , sews, she paints in oils & watercolours, gives some of her paintings as presents..
We proudly display one of J's paintings in our home in Sheffield..
J does a lot for her church & also knits for the local hospital, J has a good friendship group across all ages, she's never bored...
Not been to the library for years as when we moved to the countryside the nearest one s 15miles away
jdible Where do you get your books from? Have you tried the online service that your library offers?
I used to. Used to for me and then took the kids. They are older so don't go. They are old enough to go themselves
Our son goes every week. He used to go to bookbugs once a week when younger and now he goes every week to borrow a new book. They also have a big room where he can build lego. We've a.so used it when we needed to print forms out. Our local library is great, it is right next to the park too.
MrsCraig ...Our local Library is across the roundabout from our park.
I used to take our daughter as a young child to the park then to the Library, we would always sit in the Children 's Corner next to the window, that way she could see her Da driving around the roundabout on his way from work, she got soooo excited when she spotted him...
janphoenix51 that is very sweet. Our library has a brilliant children's corner. It is always busy there. You get free parking too which encourages people to visit.
Yes kids love the library, they go at least every 2 weeks, if a craft workshop is on, they go to that too
I am ashamed to say I haven't been to the library for some years. I used to go regularly, at least once per week, but with the internet now readily available with so much information and my increasing disability, I find it easier to stay at home.
Yes i do every now and then. When I'm looking for information about something I'm about to try to build.
Occassionaly because i think we need to pull out all the stops to keep them open and there are so many other services available. My mum goes to the library every week for an Italian class.
Last Saturday .I use ours a lot ,computers ,photo copying I bake cakes for community days …if they don’t get used they will be closed
