Waitress Sacked after Receiving £8,000 Tip, is This Fair?
Ask a Question
Ok this was in America where the portions are big and so are the tips it seems
This lady received a massive tip of $10,000 from a customer who wanted to spread some joy while in town attending a friends funeral
One condition was she shared the tip with the other 8 waitresses , which she did
But the restaurant sacked her , not giving a reason, but she thinks it was because other staff involved in running the restaurant complained they didn't get a share
If the other staff were administration i don't see how they could claim some of it, i thought tips were for the poorly paid serving staff ?
Do you think everyone should have got a slice of the cake, so to speak ?

It’s disgusting she was sacked but as a mother of a chef I believe tips should be shared amongst all staff.
Pjran I am not sure how tips work in the service section P, especially in the US , i suppose it depends on how much each staff member is paid, i only know waitresses are not well paid there in general and depend on tips to supplement their wages , which is totally wrong
But chefs are the backbone of a restaurant so i also agree with you there P
I think it was the customer’s choice and intention it went to all the waitresses if that’s what they specified. She did as she was asked. I don’t believe it should go to administration as they are not front of house service. As far as chefs are concerned they do work really hard and deserve tips but depends on the company’s policy. I would say unfair dismissal unless the policy is clearly stated in employment contract what is accepted or not. I’m not sure how America works though.
telmel ...My sister & brother in law went out for his birthday a few weeks ago,the bill was £75.00 for the food & the restaurant added £12 service charge that they weren't expecting, my sister was told that she could remove it but she didn't want the hassle so left it on..
janphoenix51 Its hassle and embarrassing to remove the charge J, thats why they do it this way so most people leave it on
When partner & I go out for a meal in a restaurant we always tip the people who serve us if the meal & service was good.
This needs to go to an unfair dismissal court of course. If reasons other then they need to state and prove. If it IS to do with the tip then it's a dishonour to the giver and the deceased.
Kitchen staff and waiters should only get a share no one else when I worked in the bar the tips was always put in a glass and it was shared between us at the end of the night
She shouldn’t have been sacked. I know in the states that waiting staff rely heavily on their tips. But what a fantastic tip - i have been a waitress and a barmaid and never had anything like that!
telmel as a barmaid I used to find that the more drunk people got the more they tipped the barstaff lol.
Waiting staff are the ones who customers yell at about food etc if they have a complaint, usually it's waiting staff they direct it to. They are only doing their job, poorly paid as it is. She did as she was asked, seems like sour grapes to me. Who's fault is that lol?
