Weird/unusual Names
Other
Just entered a competition to go see the Aurora Borealis and it reminded me of a baby girl I recently with that exact name. I also once knew parents who named their child with a relatively normal first name but 2nd and 3rd were Beetlestone Mortis! Damien Lucifer Maelstrom was another that some parents chose until I explained the name Lucifer. Very appropriate subject for Halloween.
This topic is so funny to me because my partners name is Bryn. When we met as a sheltered 18 year old i was so confused. I was like your name is WHAT? Bryn? How do you spell that? B R I N? but I genuinely had never heard of the name! So to me it was unusual!
But beetlestone mortis is a little more out there than Bryn I guess I feel like in modern times people tend to go for the more unusual names, to make their child seem more unique or special I guess Xx
Ha ha, yes, I suppose any name you haven't heard would be strange but my best friend of 35 years husband was called Bryn and also a well known Welsh tenor is called Bryn Terfel. I believe Bryn as a name has Welsh origins.
I come across a lot of unusual/unique names as a teacher. Parents want their children to stand out. I can understand people picking unusual names, but at the same time, you need to think about when the child is older and they go for job interviews. The name Aurora by itself is not that unusual, add Borealis to it and it is.
My daughter is Nirvana, i love it & dont think of it as hugely unusual but ive seen a few raised eyebrows! X
In the scheme of things I would say that is unusual rather than weird. I would say the raised eyebrows are more about your daughter's name being associated with a heavy metal band rather than the name itself. I know 3 girls called Nevaeh, which of course is heaven spelt backwards.
I'm Romie. Hate it. For 47 years.. "spell it", "what is it again", "I've forgotten it" !
Mum didn't give it to me to "stand out". It's actually a mis-pronounced name!
Having never had ANYTHING personalised, the children I feel bad for now are those with a 'regular' name but the parents spell it differently just to seem unique. Latest example I have heard... Jodeee. Yes 3 e's!
Oh and Humphrey... What do you shorten that to? Hum-hum? Humpy? Humfy? Ok I appreciate parents choose names that they don't want shortened.. just imagine darling Humphrey on the football pitch and a team mate wants the ball, by the time he has Humphreys attention, the ball is lost.
Oh dear, I do feel for you! I agree with you about misspelled names and having to go through life forever correcting the regular spelling to the silly ones of a parent's whim. Chelzey springs to mind, Jayde, and then there are the Chardonnays and I even met a mum who called her twins Dolce and Gabbana. It is rather silly to misspell your child's name as no one knows it is any different unless they need it written for some reason and then most people just inwardly laugh at the stupidity......or ignorance.
My dog is called aurora borealis she is named after the northern lights. We get the northern from November on wards. Here in the highlands. It's lovely to see them dance and the colours are out of this world.. hope you are lucky with the win.
When we got pregnant with girl , i told hubby to name her Shiese as it sounds nice but hubby said no please because it sounds meanse crazy in german. We just change it to leigh instead
I must admit that I would not have a clue how to pronounce that.
Shy-ees, shee-es, sheeese, and it would have to be spelled out every single time lol. I think your hubby made a good call there
