Whats the Oldest iPhone Where the Apps Still Work?

Ask a Question

I want to get a second iPhone for my business but on a budget. I don’t need anything fancy just the oldest one where the apps still download as I know after so long each iPhone model outdates and apps stop working… any ideas? Thank you.

JLouM I have 6s plus since 2016 and battery is not good don’t think I’d bother with getting a replacement as it’s old model! Don’t even know if they do a new battery..buying new phone too expensive!!

Apparently since Dec 2023

The following iPhone models don't receive updates anymore, in the sense they can't have the newest operating system iOS17, which means things might run but Apple will stop support of them, so many apps will only be available on some too. This is quite common. I'd probably aim for an iPhone 11 or newer.

iPhone X.

iPhone 8 (Plus)

iPhone SE (1st generation)

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus.

iPhone 6(S) and 6(S) Plus.

iPhone 5, 5S, and 5C.

iPhone 4 and 4S.

Older models.

I don't know how accurate this chart is but seems a decent one to have an idea with:

DeBunny I have 6s plus just had a look iOS update that’s available now is 15.8.1 lol

Battery isn’t doing well but still okay.. have say 60% or so next morning turn it on drops to 1%

Don’t think I’d bother with getting a new battery or if they do them?

New models are so expensive

kitty88uk Yeah I wouldn't personally bother, my father in law changed the battery in an iPhone 6 not too long ago, so you probably can. But I think not having the newer updates can put you at a potential security risk. I've just updated to iOS 17.3 this is what it says the changes are:

I always use a secondhand phones, usually a friend/family members old ones.

If you wanted to sell your phone, apparently the lowest you will get anything decent for it, it would need a minimum of 80% battery health, which you can find in settings, otherwise I think the phone gets downgraded to not working.

I only just had 80% battery health when I sold my iPhone 10, but the person was happy. Think I let it go for £90 as the person came to me and checked it over and was happy at that price (plus I only paid £100 for it a year or so before that!) I just wanted it gone and had to travel 25 minutes out to a trade in store, unless I used an online site, but I was moving. I was told from the sale sites for trade-in stores that I'd get around £100-£120, but knowing them they would 'downgrade it' so actually get a lot less. I like to work out how much I'd get from trading them in and the price they sell them for secondhand (baring in mind they get a warranty with them) and pick somewhere in between. But you have to be careful online with so many scammers, so sometimes easier just to trade in.

My battery is seriously degraded lol but it’s hanging on. My phone still works but powers down rapidly.

Pretty disgusting really that the iPhone X was only released a little over 6 years ago, and yet they've stopped supporting it and it cannot be updated.

In no other business would this be tolerated, yet phone companies (and Apple In particular) get away with it.

I prefer the android operating system anyway over IOS so even before you factor in the price premium for Apple I already don't want one. My mother has a Redmi 12C it was about £60. It has a great camera and she has a RWG mobile contract which is 24 months for £35 with about 2GB data per month, 250 minutes, 250 texts, 50 international minutes. I'm on the same RWG deal although have a Redmi Note 10 pro. I just don't see the point of paying huge sums for a mobile and a top end contract.

I think IOS users really should try a android phone for a while. It could save you hundreds maybe thousands over 5 years if you buy the android phone outright and just go for the best sim only monthly deal for the amount of data you need.
