Did You Ever Have a Whitlow, kids' complaints we no longer have.

Other

Whitlows were a common complaint when i was a child but you don't seem to see or hear about them these days.

It is totally my own fault as i am a nail biter, though not constantly. I don't remember them being this painful and i have had it for over a week, can't bear it to touch anything and it's on my left forefinger and i am left handed!

Do you remember scab covered knees and styes on eyes etc? Luckily they don't seem so rife although headlice are still stubbornly hanging around.

What childhood things like this did you have or remember?

I have just looked it up and it is apparently more serious than I thought and can take 2 or 3 weeks to heal.

I have been treating it wrongly on two counts. I have been holding it in hot salted water and I tried pricking the blister with a pin (excruciating!), both of which it says don't do! It recommends cold ice packs, obviously keeping clean and clean gauze dressing. Oh well looks like I have to ride it out.

I've had to look up what a Whitlow was and it doesn't look very nice to have, I hope yours heals up soon!

I used have really thick hair when I was a young lass and it was a nightmare for anyone trying to help me get rid of them as I had so much bushy hair.

I remember having a stye.. it wasn't pleasant but I was more self conscious about how it looked than how it felt 🤣

Nadiaparveen when my granddaughter was little and caught lice, I used 10 drops of rosemary and 10 drops of tea tree essential oils in 10/20 mls of cool water and sprayed her hair, tied it up and overnight they all died.

I have extremely thick, bushy hair though I am white, so don't know where I got it from! I only caught lice from her once but I used to colour my hair and when I did so that also got rid of them lol.

Lynibis that's a really good idea using essential oils as I know they have many beneficial components.

I definitely remember having scabs especially on my knees and you couldn’t help picking them, although you knew you shouldn’t.

eyeballkerry yep and then you got specks of blood on your clothes until it scabbed over again. There was a sort of weird pleasure in picking scabs.

Oh definitely yes I had these and found them painful. My Mum used to put a poultice on them can't remember the name of it. Luckily haven't had one for years and fingers crossed it stays that way

sallylester1 I was surprised to read about them on the nhs site. They can be very painful and actually make you feel quite ill. Yesterday it was agony when I accidentally knocked it but woke up this morning and it felt lots better, but has deteriorated during the day. The nhs says use ice pack or hold in iced water and take painkillers, who knew🙄
