Whens the Last Time You Went to a Bookshop?

Ask a Question

When is the last time you visited a bookshop?

I overheard someone the other day saying that no one goes to book shops anymore, because they all just order on Amazon.

I go pretty regularly and also check charity shops often for books. However i will admit i check the book prices online whilst in the story and sadly more often than not i do end up ordering on amazon

jms19 I check prices against online ones too, and sometimes get them from the library instead of buying. I read a lot so the cost would mount up if I was buying them all new at retail price.

SamGoodship I agree with you. I only buy books in the book sale/clearance departments. The library is my first choice for autobiographies, DIY, and music quizzes.

We bought a friend a book from Waterstones for his birthday. Ordered it online then collected, great service.

With the huge popularity in online shopping as well as the use of Kindles, I can't see brick and mortar bookshops like Waterstones lasting for too much longer to be honest. It will all be online.

RegularComper91 I'm sad I don't have one near anymore. It's at least half an hour to the nearest Waterstones. Otherwise I scour charity shops.

I haven't been for a while but I have a book token that I need to redeem and plan to visit the local bookshop next week.

SamGoodship I'm thinking of another Adele Parks or possibly Tana French, mind you I quite enjoyed the last book by Walter Mosley. I'm so undecided 😲

We only went into a bookshop last month because we were trying to kill time waiting for our car MOT. It was actually nice to look around and flick thru the books.

I found a book for my daughter but didn’t want to pay £10 for it, since I found the same book on Amazon half price. I know I should support small, independent businesses but the price difference was just too great.

I am very surprised how WHSmiths keeps going. Our local one now has the post office in it but it’s never crowded when I go in.

I tend to window shop in book shops unless they are old fashioned ones which I love browsing in.they are full of ambience and literary ghosts,I normally buy books from charity shops and/or online.I get the Bibliophile mag as well which always has great deals you can get by post.

I love cooking books in particular curry and cake. I go to Waterstones when I am in a town that has one and look at new books. I then look on Amazon, Abe and ebay and wait for them to reduce. I try not to pay more than £10 for a new book. I also go to the library and if I like a book enough I will buy it. If there are only a few good receipes I take a photo of them on my phone and print them off. I also look in charity shops for books. For novels I am a member of Netgalley whereby you request a book and if you are granted it you leave reviews. I also like independent bookshops my favourite is Booka in Oswestry that has lovely cake, drinks and great cooking books. There is a shop in Nottinghill London that just has cooking books.

I am a member of a book swap club. You donate borrow and return. It’s brilliant. Sometimes I pick up a few in The Works.

irishannie Several Tesco Stores (Tesco Extra) in my area have a table packed with books, cassettes, craft materials, various packs of greeting/birthday cards, CDs and there is a collection tin for the BHF. But I have seen people helping themselves to the various items without giving a donation. (I don't blame them)

Pre Covid I used to regularly go into WH Smith's, normally when my train was delayed but have moved to a Kindle so not so often. I even bought books from them for Christmas online. As I could Pre ordered signed editions. So it must be a couple of years.

Used to pop into The Works but not for the last year. Love a good secondhand book shop though.

I always look at books in charity shops except Oxfam as find them very expensive for their books so generally ignore them. It's often cheaper to get them online than at Oxfam. I never go into waterstones and never look at the books in Wh Smiths. I sometimes look at the Poundland selection. If I'm after a specific book I generally do a search online to find the best price. I don't think I've ever bought a physical book from Amazon strangely although make use of their free kindle books time to time.

The only time I go into a bookshop is if they have colouring pads or cards also, that's at Christmas time the odd year if I'm in town shopping. As we had to learn to shop online and use cards, not cash during covid.

It's a long time ago I think maybe 19 year ago I went into Waterstones. But I buy on online from there also Blackwell's, WHSmith The Works and Amazon. Just so much easier.
