Why Do We Have a Stronger Reaction to Animal Deaths in Fiction?

Ask a Question

Even if the whole film is not based on a real life story, it always seems more upsetting to see an animal get injured than a human, why?

This is me 100%, l cannot watch a film/movie where an animal is injured or dies, it cannot tell you how much pain it is in or how it feels, it loves you unconditionally and relies on you for everything...humans can speak...l won't say anymore incase l offend some...

To be honest this is pretty common and it is kind of weird but maybe it’s because realistically people will lose a lot more pets in their lives so it brings back more memories.

My mother gets upset about the shark getting killed in Jaws. Yesterday I saw a rare silver grey fox in her garden, a very large one which climbed over a 6ft high fence and stared at me through the window and was about 50% bigger than any previous fox I'd seen but she got upset when I told her about it because she didn't want to worry about the fox. She really loves animals. I didn't even know foxes could climb fences like that, I had to look online to check because I was really surprised they could do that. I hope to see it again as it was such a beautiful creature. I'm not 100% sure it was silver grey because it was dark but there was some light available and I couldn't see a normal red coat it looked a very dark coat to me. Anyway she really gets upset about animals in films. I'm pretty soft myself. I couldn't watch Bambi as a kid as the beginning of the film was so upsetting.

I really hate seeing animals suffer in films because I'm unsure if animals have actually suffered where as with people you know they are ok unless you are watching a snuff movie from south america or something.

I get tearful at both unless the human is a baddie, especially the dog in that film with Harrison Ford, Call of the Wild.

I guess overall that many of us have suffered more at the hands of other human beings than we have if at all with animals . Pets are often more loyal and easier to manage as do they often shower us with love and affection when treated with respect.
