Why Do Rich People Keep Being given Stuff?

In the News

In today's news Keir Starmer's wife has been given £5000 worth of clothes which they failed to declare.

This is not an isolated incident when it comes to VIP's and celebs and it makes me sick that those who can afford it the most get the most...for free.

Some of the goody bags at award ceremonies have been known to contain diamonds, holidays and are worth thousands.

I can understand why the big companies do it, they think it will be good advertising, but the plebs (common people), can't afford their gear and i doubt the rich succumb to advertising, they just buy whatever they want when they want.

I just dont understand why the super rich are so scroogelike.

martinlufc5637 it would be nice to think they gave them to their staff as gift/reward for their hard work on their behalf.

Lynibis I doubt it, probably the holiday doesn't get used, watchers ect..just left in a draw ect... Did a quick Google on this year's bags

Inside the “Everyone Wins” Nominee Gift Bags - which is reportedly worth more than $170,000 - are nearly 60 items, the most valuable being a three-night stay at a luxury Swiss chalet for 10 people worth $50,000.

martinlufc5637 you see, I don't understand how the chalet stay has any benefit for the giver. Why not give that to a deserving member of the community if you can afford to miss out on $50k.

Lynibis Their staff!!! Hard work??? Doing what!!!??? I have said it before the prime minister and his misses are middle class people who do not care one bit about the struggling working class.

jam45 it was meant to be sarcasm but didn't come across as I meant it. But having been a civil servant I can tell you we worked our butts off while management spent all day lunching, meetings, coffee and travelling staying in hotels!

Lynibis No, I didn't mean you Lynibis doing a proper job. I am talking about the Labour Party's office staff who is as bad as the management team you are talking about.

I think i saw Starmer in one of the donated outfits on facebook today , he was dressed as robin hood, but they had changed the hood bit to another not so pleasant term , referring to the pensioners and winter fuel payments

Couldn't post it as it would have got removed , lol

Even Ed Davey admitted being given a suit in the past but not the one he’s wearing today.

Absolutely disgusting the goodie bags awarded to so called celebrities when some people can't afford to heat their homes or eat a decent meal!

janphoenix51 if they cared about their fellow humans they would donate to charity, not the ones that only give a penny in the pound, but genuine ones. But of course it's a case of I'm alright Jack. Some celebs are known for their altruism, like Keanu Reeves.

Mad isn't it. They have all this money and still get freebies. Yet people that have no money get nothing. It's not right

It is mistakenly thought that money comes with brains but sadly the two are rarely bedfellows, the only thing that fame engenders is greed.

I assume the gifts if worn might encourage their friends to buy the same.

I'd rather they were given stuff rather than charging tax payers for stuff that really they should pay for themselves. Lets not forget the expenses scandal where people were claiming for a huge amount of stuff like plasma TVs for their second homes etc. Even today I don't think taxpayers should have to pay for state of the art computers for politicians which many claim for but I guess you can at least understand they will use them for their job. This image is from the Guardian so a more leftwing orientated newspaper. When I was young I had quite a lot of positivity towards politicans but now I have very little regard for any of them whatever the party. Feathering their own nests but absolutely clueless what they are doing.

BonzoBanana This is absolutely shocking how much money these MPs can claim for -everything you can think of. More shocking is the Liberal Democrats expenses.

jam45 Yeah that 'all allowances' figure from 2008-2009 which is approaching £100 million and there is only about 500 MPs, £200,000 each approx. Many times their actual wages. I don't mind being paid £25K if I can claim another £60K per annum for day to day expenses like travel, energy, top end computers etc. No wonder so many MPs have lavish houses which normally their basic wage wouldn't provide. It's all manipulation so we think their wage is actually reasonable but unlike normal honest people they claim a huge amount on top. We need to get skilled people in government who are motivated more by patriotism rather than simply paying themselves as much as possible in a manipulative way.

I quite agree, I think it's obscene, they're just like greedy pigs. They all can afford plenty, without freebies. The most in need never get them. We live in a very twisted world, I'm sorry to say.

I read that the Tory party under John Majors started this £20,000 expenses nonsense and, it has increased rapidly.
