Widow Who Sent over $1m to a Romance Scammer, Took Her Own Life

In the News

I notice that scammers always target people around the ages of 50~60 or more, and that's because folks aged 20~40 know these are scams and would never give them a cent of their money. Or even bother speaking to them.

It's sad this keeps on happening, and in this partucular case this woman clearly lost her mind to send the scammer everything she owned. And then took her own life, maybe out of shame and fear?

Don't send money to strangers. Even banks warn people of it, but somehow gets ignored.

Surely there should be, if there isn't already, a law where the scammer is charged with at the very least manslaughter. This would be a good deterrent to the next nefarious scumbag. Personally I think they should throw the book at him and everything else including the kitchen sink.

EmmaWright762 They're generally somewhere in Nigeria or India so they don't care about it, even if the victims kill themselves the scammers couldn't careless. All they want is their $$$.

Pfs No, no, no. The "victim" chooses to respond to a complete stranger asking for money. They could have ignored the email, etc and block them, but chose to respond instead.

jam45 it might seem harsh on what I am saying but we need to toughen up on crime because we are far too soft as a nation.

Pfs The scammer didn't kill her. He manipulated her into sending him money. When the scammer couldn't get any more money, she eventually found out what kind of person he is. I am shocked at the bank allowing the transfer of money to the scammer. Common senses could have told the bank this is "money laundering" and to block it and have a quiet word with the victim.

Leannexxx I would involve the bank into this romance and inform them about money laundering. Hopefully the bank will side with children.

Unfortunately lots of people are lonely or join dating sites because they have that need for a partner.

I'm in that older bracket but unless l get dementia / alzheimer l believe l would never entertain a scammer, no one is getting any of my money through a dating site or phone call scam from my bank. Maybe I just have the attitude that l earned my money so I'm keeping it for me no matter what sob story they spin me, I've been single since 2017 so I'm Not lonely, just old and wise with all my faculties at the moment.

Shortly after I was widowed I got a friend request on FB.I think these people seek out widows. He stole some handsome Italian man's profile and sent me oodles of 'loving' texts and pictures of roses. In less than three days he started asking for google play cards .He got quite stroppy when I refused to send him anything saying how selfish I was. These people just prey on the sad and the lonely.

MelissaLee1 Well done! You smelled a rat a mile off. A pity these vulnerable women and men can't see through a complete stranger asking for money or demanding it.
