Woman Dies from Cancer Washing Her Husbands Overalls Containing Asbestos

In the News

Such a sad story, this wife was just washing her husbands overalls after he had come home from work

Unbeknown to them both they were covered in asbestos dust from him working at the local power station

He passed away first at 89 from mesothelioma , and his wife died 10 years later with the same and at the same age

I am amazed they reached that age , they must have been so strong and healthy within themselves

I have never heard of this type of thing happening, usually asbestos poisoning occurs when roofs of older buildings are ripped down for example, and this was before people were aware at how dangerous asbestos is

I hope the family get what they deserve , although nothing makes up for the loss of the couples lives

Sad story, they still lived a long life at 89 , so they did well compared to others who died through asbestos

We cannot say for sure but we believe my Uncles death from Asbestosis was as a result of giving his Dad a hug when he came home from his job removing asbestos.

The fact his Brother died of the same thing a few years later sort of reinforces the theory.

So sad story we still have a asbestos roof on our garage my partners farther use to remove it years ago but. With no safety gear years later he found out he had cancer form working with it and also his work colleagues also had the same it turns out when they was removing it the dust from asbestos got into there lungs so sad what we know now about it the amount of mechanics who also got it from doing brakes on vehicles as the old brake pads used to have asbestos in them thank god we no longer use it in buildings but sadly theres still so many buildings with it still in

After my husband died they found asbestos in my bedroom and have now ripped the ceiling to bits.Strange that they only just found it.Been living there for over 15 years and had more than one inspection in that time so all a bit weird really. This couple seemed quite resilient thank God.

MelissaLee1 Thats terrible M, so sorry to hear that

If asbestos was found in your home rented or private you still have the right to claim against the owner or builder, there will be insurance in place , regardless how many years ago it happened

I know it wont change anything but it may help otherways

My father died of this January 2022. He started his own building company back in the 1970s when people really weren't aware of the dangers of absestos or other problems such as lead content in paint. They worked their socks off as did the women looking after them and their families. I can not find adequate words to describe how this leaves me feeling.

EmmaWright762 I used to have involvement with these types of tragedies years ago E, and as i mentioned to M, i would take advice over this , if he was supplied materials or paints which unknowingly contained banned chemicals or materials then the family could look to be compensated

I know in industry chromate was used as an additive to the steelmaking and coating process

When they started using it there was no use of safety equipment like masks or gloves, and the employees just poured it straight from the containers into the mix , splashes going everywhere including on the skin

The same chromate was used in the vietnam war as a weapon and was called agent orange, it was cancerous and would burn the skin off anyone that came in contact with it

telmel That would work out interesting as he left everything to his girlfriend. My inheritence was the job of making his coffin look respectable by providing the only decent wreath then walking away with a well bitten lip rather than decking the greedy moo.

EmmaWright762 In that situation it would not be worth pursuing E

I dealt with this a lot in 26 years as a Registrar. I started in 1985 when things weren't so regulated. If we ever got a death certificate with mesothelioma on it we had to report it to the coroner as often there would be compensation involved.
