Woman Seriously Injured by a Herd of Cows
In the News
When you think of someone being attacked by animals , vicious dogs or other wild animals immediately spring to mind
But the last thing you would think as dangerous would be a herd of cows
Yet this woman was trampled by them despite being on a public walkers footpath in the field
And the injuries were not minor , she had two collapsed lungs, 12 broken ribs, both sides of her pelvis broken to name a few
Then three days after surgery she was put in an induced coma
This happened three years ago and she has not fully recovered
It brings back memories for me as a child, when my brother and i and two friends decided to go camping in a field overnight a few miles from where i lived
The field was empty so we thought we would be ok
The next morning we woke up and when we looked outside our tent was surrounded by cows , and cowpats !
We were oblivious to any danger and thought it hilarious , we just packed up and moved on
Things could have been a lot worse if the cows had stampeded

This time of year you have to be particularly careful walking through a herd of cows. They protect their calves by chasing people and can trample you!
I've walked through many a field with cows and never had any problems. However dogs can spook cows and of course are a huge killer of sheep and other small animals including calves. About 30,000 people are killed by dogs per year and I'm sure many 10s of thousands more of other animals. Rabies from dogs is the biggest killer though to humans with attacks by dogs spreading rabies which we don't get here in the UK. I assumed a dog would be involved even before clicking the link and sure enough a dog featured in the news report. Cows have a fear of dogs and many dogs bark and get hyper active around cows but even a placid dog might spook a cow as they recognise it as a predator and something to run from. Sheep can be terrified by dogs too and of course many have been killed by dogs.
The responsible thing if you have a dog is not to take it near cows especially if you haven't got good control of the dog and it does it's own thing.
I've been approached by a cow and spent five minutes rubbing its head they are really gentle creatures (not bulls) but of course there is a lot of weight there if spooked. I speak very softly and walk very carefully around them and keep as much distance as possible between them.
The dog in that article is not small. It looks like a Rottweiler cross. Maybe the advice should be simply don't take your dog near to cows rather than have it on a short lead. I don't see how a short lead would help. If the cows have calves about and see a predator dog I don't see how a short lead would reduce the risk of the cows stampeding. Also if someone walks a dog close to cows and puts them on a heightened sense of alert and someone without dogs then comes by they are put at risk too. I just think cows and dogs don't mix especially when there are calves about.
BonzoBanana Yes dogs are a big problem B and definitely unsettle cows to say the least
I bet their bigger fear is of humans , it's us that eat them when we have finished drinking their milk
telmel I'm not sure it is as humans give them water and provide food. They probably should fear people more though based on what happens to them.
BonzoBanana Yes, they only realise something is wrong when they reach the slaughterhouse
Your experience is hilarious, l only wish you had a film of it lol. As for the woman who got trampled l am sorry for her injuries but she should have taken into account that if it was calfing time well they can be complete and udder cows when it comes to protecting their babies.
EmmaWright762 We didn't have mobile phones back in the day E, otherwise it would probably have been on social media
Most people don't realise cows are dangerous. They are herd animals and weight tons. People demand right of way on paths over fields but don't understand why a farmer doesn't want this to happen. It's to protect both the animals and those walking
I wonder why cows have become such killers as children we used to play in fields with cows and other animals without any problems maybee they are too intensively farmed it is somehing that needs looking into as it is on the increase according to the press and farming journals.
Cows are evil in my opinion. Walking on a footpath some years ago we were chased to the stile to get over a wall, the cows plotted with each other and turned around and ran through an alternative field to meet us at the other side of the stile. We had no dogs and there were no calves present. I never never walk near cows anymore.
They are very big and powerful animals,it's a miracle that it does not happen a lot more, especially when they are sometimes very badly treated and always having their calves taken away from them only 24 hours after birth!
Cows are pretty big and strong so this can happen, i’m always a little nervous when in a field with them
Our local MP Lord David Blunkett was injured back in 2009 out walking in Derbyshire with his guide dog Sadie & his son..
David was lucky as a week earlier l retired Professor Michael Porter had lost his life when walking with his wife, brother & 2 dogs..
There was 4 attacks that year involving cows..
