Worlds Population to Fall for 1st Time since Black Death, is It a Good Thing ?
Ask a Question
I think the fall in the world population has both good and bad implications
Good because the planet it becoming overpopulated and unsustainable regarding resources such as food
Bad because populations will probably only fall in the developed countries where people make choices about starting a family or not
Poorer nations have more children because of a lack of education and birth control , and this results in so much poverty as they dont have the resources or infrastructure to cloth and feed their children and many poorer countries depend on donations and charities to keep them alive
Do you think a drop in the population is needed and are there any more implications ?

Continued population growth is unsustainable. But a decreasing population, doesn't bode well for future economies or being able to look after an increasingly aging population. Given how expensive everything has become, more people will likely decide raising children is just too unaffordable.
It's about time! The planet cannot sustain the growth of population that we have previously experienced and a fall in world population can only help the environment and the worlds depleting resources.
I think it’s a good thing as it’s so overcrowded now and people can’t meet their needs. It would be bad if it didn’t stop at a certain sustainable level though.
It can be a good thing we are over populated but it can't fall to low. Think it will go back up though
I think with global warming it will get much worse with a huge drop in population. Extreme weather will cause a reduction in crops and fertile land across the world. Retirement age needs to be raised and perhaps we need to make it so physical jobs are pushed more to the young so we can have more non physical jobs for the elderly. If we live longer then retirement age needs to be later it's as simple as that. However it doesn't need to be full time hours. It could be reduced hours as you get older. The point is we shouldn't be financially compromised when a countries population increases in age as an average.
I was amazed to hear them on news moaning about the decline in pop. the other day. Do they want us to keep increasing until the earth can no longer sustain us all? They said we will have to rely on immigration to keep the pop up, why so? We are comfortable for 40 mill and have 60mill+. A smaller population would mean more jobs, education, housing, medical, and general improvement in living standards. I understand that initially there would be a large older pop to deal with but after 2/3 generations that too would decline so there really is no excuse for saying youngsters should have MORE babies. I want to care about poorer countries but let's be honest. We have all been around for roughly the same amount of time and if they can't control and build their own infrastructure, give contraception, get educated, build, grow and all the other things then they should get rid of their corrupt governments instead of moving where the going is good and thus making all countries third world. This subject makes me so cross and maybe I don't grasp every aspect but it seems logical to me instead of second guessing take action.
Lynibis I think part of the reason the government say we need more immigration is because they cannot stop it at the moment, illegal anyway , so they are trying to convince the populas it is not a bad thing , never mind it costing £5 to £6 million a day for hotel accommodation and rising
Lynibis I think governments run the economy as some sort of pyramid scheme where they keep increasing the population to make the GDP bigger so they can manage the debts more easily. However of course this has long term implications and is hugely damaging in many ways as the country cannot support such a high population regarding food production so we rely more on imports and this creates more debt. Ultimately we have to return to sound competent government policies but no one seems to be coming up with any sadly. I've never known politicians to be so incompetent they don't even seem to recognise the real problems of the country.
BonzoBanana I agree and a lot of that is due to the problems of such a huge population. They seem to stand around scratching their heads not knowing how to deal with all the demands, and probably not caring! It's a Catch 22 situation.
Well realistically it is a good thing because as others have said, the population seems to be too big as is.
However i do think it’s sad that people are deciding against having kids as they feel they can’t provide for them financially
jms19 you are absolutely right, but at least they are being responsible and not having loads of kids to be raised and paid for by the state. In 12 years working with cared for kids I saw fickle parents having baby after baby and each being taken straight into care, costing £350 to £450 per week per child to foster without associated costs.
