Is It worth Having Collectables?

Ask a Question

Do you have something you like to collect?

The second hand market for Barbie dolls has been going through the roof, with lots of people trying to get their hands on an Allan doll.

I have a loft full of Barrie dolls but unfortunately none are in their original packaging. Due to the Barbie film being out, it’s probably a good time to sell.

eyeballkerry I'd recommend giving it a go. My mum kept all my polly pockets and I sold it all a few years ago on ebay. They were used and had bits missing ect (I listed all faults) but still made over £600.

Midnightflower I also have polly pockets in the loft and was trying to get them all back in their right homes before selling.

eyeballkerry I did the same and then listed the random items separately aswell. I really didn't expect it to sell as well as it did but there are lots of collectors out there.

I sold one damaged plastic necklace and doll for £19, I couldn't believe it.

Midnightflower wow, that was a result. I have got so much stuff in my loft that it needs a really good clear out. We are hoping to move next year so like to get it done before then.

Midnightflower ...Hope your Mum shared the money with you! Our only child hardly threw any of her toys out so we gave some to her second cousins, friends but mostly Primary School,Play Group.

We have kept her special toys, she was more Dr Who than Barbie!

janphoenix51 yes 😊 I am very fortunate that she let me keep it all. I think she was happy to finally get rid of it out of the attic.

There are those who have them for sentimental value, others because they're fans, and the third kind: To resell later.

You know, when PlayStation 5 launched it sold on eBay for as high as £1000+ and now it's available everywhere for £400 (more or less) so the scalpers are stuck with the unsold stock and have to sell it as a loss. Haha.

I've rarely scalped my items and rather sold it for a price I'd consider reasonable.

PhilipMarc, My sister won all the Teletubbies when her twin boys were young, you couldn't get them anywhere as they were in high demand..

Instead of selling on them to make a profit she kept them for her boys & passed them on to their cousins when her boys had outgrown them..

The twins are now 28 with an older brother at 33.

MrsCraig Collecting something doesn't have to be pricey. Of course it can be, but it depends what you are collecting! I know some who collecting glass figures they find in charity shops, car boots etc for a couple of quid. Or those who collect penguin ornaments.

SamGoodship yes it doesn't have to be expensive, but even those few pounds add up. I would personally rather put that money into savings for the future.

Only thing i collect is coins but only the special ones in circulation. I get most of them just in my change and won’t pay anything above face value. I’ve got about £70 worth atm and plan to just keep collecting.

Me too. But I will sell some of mine in the near future, if I am broke or the coins (50p, £2, £5 note) soar in value.

jam45 yeah i would do that as well but a lot of the ones i have are worth only about £5 so i’d rather just keep them for now.

jms19 ..Good for you,the prices some were asking for a certain coin was extortionate, really laughable...As if!!

We like you, collect the special coins in our change & put them in our daughter's money box she does the same..

janphoenix51 yeah I actually like coins anyway so this is a good way to collect i think as it doesn’t actually cost anything and it’s like a piggy bank.

possy I read somewhere that the ordinary 50p coins in your change is only worth the face value of it. Only those supplied by The Royal Mint is worth anything. But I will hold onto my shop change ones.

SamGoodship I had so many of the Beatrix Potter 50p coins in my loose change that I have spent most of them. I think I have got only one of each characters left.

SamGoodship I’m exactly the same. My plan is to never sell them and had them down to my son, he’s only 6 now but he may appreciate them later in life x

I collected the Lilliput Lane houses. They are lovely to look at but a pain to clean and if you have to decorate a pain to re-box. I have over 100 all but 1 with boxes and a few with very minor damage. My mother in law collected Beswick horses and the resale price on those has gone way down especially as we don't have the boxes.

I collect empty wine and spirit bottles, but I give them away to some nice men who collect them every 3 weeks. They also take my black bags with them too!

Saves the clutter.
