Should Young Drivers Pay More for Car Insurance?

Ask a Question

Should young drivers have to pay more for car insurance?

Insurance costs for 17-24 year olds have skyrocketed to £3,000. But is it fair given their higher risk?

I don't think that it is fair for them to be paying £3000 but they should be paying a little more as they are a higher risk. I paid a higher premium when I first passed and it dropped down as I got older. It is the same for every driver but I do think £3000 is excessive.

It doesn’t seem fair but then insurance in general doesn’t seem fair to me. If you drive for 50 years and never claim imagine the money you have spent for basically nothing.

Cheaper if you don't have insurance as the penalty of getting caught isn't as much

Pfs it is if you cause an accident and kill someone. They also have the power to seize your car and won’t release it to you until you prove you have insurance- they also charge you storage per day. You then get a conviction on your license increasing your insurance. Can you tell i worked in insurance for a while?

Insurance has rocketed for everyone but it’s unjust for those who have just passed their test regardless of age.

It always has been higher and for a young person the insurance is usually more than the cost of their first car. I remember when my son started driving, it nearly emptied his bank account.

Young people have the famous black box fitted for cheaper Insurance...

Only yesterday as I walked back to work with my service user I saw a sticker..

Black Box fitted....Believe me,

I'm as peed off as you mate!!!

Similar wording to PEED OFF if you get my meaning!

Think it’s a bit high for young drivers and out of some just can’t afford it, think they should pay a bit and if they have a claim which is there fault there premiums should them be a lot higher so there penalised for bad driving

They should pay more for insurance, my street is supposed to be access only, but the younger drivers do race down it as a short cut + they are involved in the most accidents.

Close to a million cars on the road now without insurance and tax etc. Such is the ridiculous light punishment for people who don't legally drive. So a lot of young drivers are probably paying zero pounds which is very affordable.

No it's not fair they need to pay a bit more than others but not being robbed

My son is 19, hasn’t learnt to drive yet as insurance is sky high. I remember when I learnt at 21, was out as second driver on a golf gti and we never paid more than £400!

A slightly higher premium would be ok but in excess of £3k is just ludicrous.

Figures are based on information from actuaries who obviously get all the information of what groups (ages, postcode, car, any convictions etc) and apparently work out a logarithm which is the ‘base’ that insurance companies use. Its always best to shop around. I have to say I have seen many really old people with shocking driving habits too though
