The Lonsdale brand was founded in London in 1960 by the then 22-year-old British boxer Bernhard Hart. His brand was named after Hugh Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale (1857-1944), who made a name for himself in modern boxing in the 1890s. Among other things, Hugh Lowther was a founding member of the National Sporting Club, which conducted public boxing matches under strict rules and thus made a decisive contribution to the social recognition of boxing. In 1960, Bernhard Hart opened the first Lonsdale shop on Beak Street, in the middle of London's Soho district. Since then, renowned professional boxers such as Muhammad Ali, Henry Cooper, Sugar Ray Robinson, Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton have wore the Lonsdale brand. Even today, these famous personalities and the most important milestones in the brand's history play a major role and repeatedly appear in the modern designs of the now extensive product line. In 1979, The Jam boss Paul Weller bought a large number of T-shirts for his concerts. Thanks to this, Lonsdale gained great fame and showed that her clothes are not only for athletes. Professional athletes, amateurs and enthusiasts around the world have been supplying the brand's products for many years.
