Shopping smartly has always been a good idea, but it’s even more important these days with inflation and the rising cost of living being a concern for most of us. Fortunately, you can make some crazy savings if you switch out your usual supermarket for a wholesale supplier like Costco.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk, said: ‘I’m always making sure I get the best price for my groceries by researching beforehand with the Supermarket Comparison Tool, but I was surprised to find that many items are even cheaper in wholesaler Costco. Buying in bulk can result in bigger savings - I’ve shared my best finds below.’
Lavazza Qualite Rossa Ground Coffee 500g - Cheapest Price Per 100g
There’s nothing like a cup of coffee in the morning as the weather gets colder, but where’s the best price? I compared deals in my nearest supermarkets and broke down the prices per 100g. My favourite is Lavazza ground coffee, but it can often be expensive. True to form, I found that Sainsbury’s and ASDA were offering it for £1.35 per 100g. Morrisons was a little cheaper, selling it for £1.20 per 100g, while Tesco was the most expensive at £1.80 per 100g - but at Costco, it’s only £1.10 per 100g, so you’re getting the best price by shopping here!
Always Ultra Long Size Sanitary Towels With Wings - Bigger Pack, Better Value
Sanitary items are essential for many, so I checked the prices for a popular brand - the Always ultra-long size pads with wings. Once again, going wholesale and bulk buying these products to store in your cupboards pays off. The priciest destination was Morrisons, as they offered 20-packs for 15p a pad. In second place was Tesco, as an 11-pack was available for 14p per pad. You can save a tiny amount in ASDA, as the same 11-pack is currently priced at 13.6p per pad, while Sainsbury's is giving its shoppers a 24-pack for 12p a pad. However,Costco comes out on top again, as their massive 48-pack is equivalent to just 11p per pad!
Kikkoman Soy Sauce - 12x Bigger, Over £1 Cheaper Per 100ml
By far the best deal to be had was with the Kikkoman Soy Sauce. If you’re regularly making stir fries, this deal is for you. That’s not all soy sauce is good for, though. It can act as a stand-in for salt in many recipes, be added to gravy, it’s useful as a marinade ingredient and you can even make a pasta sauce with it. In Morrisons and Sainsbury’s their 150ml bottle is £1.33 per 100ml, Tesco has the same size for £1.77 per 100ml, and in ASDA it’s £1.73 per 100ml. However, in Costco, you’re getting a container 12 times the size for a fraction of the price. It has to be seen to be believed - their huge 1.9 litre bottle comes out at just 37p per 100ml!
Ariel All-In-One Pods - Buy In Bulk For A Better Price
Stocking up on washing capsules is always a good idea - after all, we’ll always need them, and it’s annoying to discover we’ve run out. Costco is offering a bumper pack of 120 Ariel All-In-One Pods for £22.39, which equates to 19p per wash. This is the best deal I could find - the only other supermarket I found with a 120-pack was Tesco, and theirs was more expensive at £24. In Morrisons, their 45-pack was £12, but you can get 9 more for 50p less in Sainsbury's or ASDA with their 54-packs for £11.50 at the moment. That being said, even if you bought two 54-packs for £23, you’d still end up with less than the Costco pack, and you’d be paying a little more.
Rice Krispies - Buy A Two-Pack & Make Some Savings
Want to keep the kids happy in the mornings? Buying branded cereal can feel daunting when we head into supermarkets these days - the prices are often through the roof. However, it’s possible to get a great deal on Rice Krispies - and even buy them in bulk - if you go to Costco. I found they had the best price compared with supermarkets. Morrisons has a 700g pack reduced from £4 to £3.50, or 50p per 100g, Sainsburys has the pack for £3.50 too, ASDA is offering 510g at 58.8p per 100g and Tesco is £3.50 or 50p per 100g. Costco comes out on top with its 2-pack deal - a duo of 700g boxes for £6.29, which equates to 45p per 100g.
Green Giant Sweetcorn - Take Home 12 Tins For Less
Costco has a great deal on Green Giant Sweetcorn right now - they’ve got a pack of 12x340g for £9.99, which equates to just 84p per can. You can’t make this saving in mainstream supermarkets - Morrisons is doing 3x340g for £3.19, but if you got 4 packs of these to make 12 you’d be paying more at £12.76. Similarly, Sainsbury's has a 3-pack for a penny more than Morrisons. Meanwhile, ASDA is offering a 4-pack of 198g tins for £3.15 - so you’re getting smaller tins for a similar price. Tesco has an individual 340g tin for £1.15 - buy 12 of these and you’ll be paying £13.80, £3.80 more than the Costco deal.
Grenade Carb Killa Protein Shake - Save On Multipacks With Ease
Grenade Carb Killa products aren’t available in every supermarket, so it’s exciting to see multipacks of their protein shakes in Costco. They’re offering an 8-pack of the White Chocolate and Fudge Brownie flavours for £13.99 right now - which equates to £1.75 per bottle. This is great value, as in Tesco and ASDA the individual bottles are available for 25p more per unit at £2. In health food stores like Boots and Holland & Barrett they’re £2.75 each, £1 more per bottle than Costco is currently pricing them at. You can buy an 8-pack at Holland & Barrett for £15, but Costco is still offering the best deal!
Wrigley’s Bubblemint Chewing Gum
With the cost of living rising, you’ll want to grab a good offer when you see it - which is why I instantly grabbed the best price on chewing gum to keep my stocks up. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are both offering 6-packs for £2.75, while at Tesco they’re £2.50 for a 6-pack and you’ll be paying £2.40 in ASDA for the same amount. Costco is number one again with its 30-pack for £11.79. Even if you went for the cheapest offer, paying £2.40 in ASDA, you’d be paying £12 if you got 5 packs to make a 30-pack - still more than Costco’s deal.
Kinder Bueno
Kinder Bueno bars are the ideal tasty treat for anyone at any time. What’s more, Costco is offering a multi-pack for chocolate fans - they’ve got 10 Kinder Bueno bars for £4.18. Morrisons and Sainsbury’s are the most expensive to compare prices, offering 4-bar multipacks for £2.25 and £2 respectively. Tesco and ASDA offer the same multipack for £1.85, but even if you bought 2.5 packs at this price to get 10 bars, you’d be paying £4.60 - 50p more than in Costco.
Huggies Baby Wipes
Those of us with little ones will want to shop smartly when it comes to keeping our baby wipes stocks up. Fortunately, Costco is offering a 10-pack for £8.29, or 83p a pack. This seems to be the best deal, especially as you’re getting 72 wipes per pack. That’s more than you’re getting in the other supermarkets I checked. For example, Sainsbury’s has a 4-pack for £3.50, which equates to 88p per pack. Plus, you’re only getting 56 wipes per pack. Meanwhile, Morrisons has single packs with only 56 wipes for 95p, and Tesco has a pack with even less - 48 wipes - for 90p. With ASDA offering 56 wipes for £1, you’ll want to head into Costco for this great deal.
