Eligibility Details For £4,258 Carer Support Payment
- Scotland expands the Carer Support Payment to 19 more council areas.
- Eligible carers can now receive £81.90 per week, totaling up to £4,258.80 annually.
- Full-time student carers are also eligible for this new benefit, unlike the previous Carers' Allowance.
- Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville emphasizes the vital work done by unpaid carers.
Scotland's unpaid carers are set to benefit from a significant financial boost as the Carer Support Payment extends across all remaining 19 council areas. At £81.90 per week, the yearly support could add up to £4,258.80, a change that's anticipated to make a meaningful impact on carers' lives.
Shirley-Anne Somerville, the Social Justice Secretary, highlighted the essential contributions of these carers, describing the role they play as "vital." “The importance of the role of unpaid carers should not be underestimated," she stated. The rollout builds on Social Security Scotland’s initiative to support more than 100,000 financially strained carers.
Katie Elliott at The Express reported that one notable aspect of the payment is its inclusivity: the benefit is accessible to unpaid carers who dedicate at least 35 hours a week and extends eligibility to those in full-time education. This marks a departure from the previous Carers' Allowance, which did not support full-time students. Under the new rules, students aged 20 and above, as well as 16- to 19-year-olds pursuing National Certificates or Highers, may qualify based on specific requirements.
Paul Traynor of Carers Trust Scotland praised the measure, recognizing the immense burden many carers shoulder. “The immense contribution of unpaid carers to society cannot be understated," he remarked, emphasizing their critical role in supporting loved ones and the broader community.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "This new benefit brings welcome financial relief for carers, particularly those juggling education and caregiving. It’s heartening to see steps being taken to acknowledge and support their dedication, but it’s equally important for everyone eligible to stay informed and apply."
