Aldi Makes Big Splash in UK Seafood Market with Record Funding
- £45 million investment in British seafood sector
- Expanded range of British-sourced fish products
- Collaborations with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership
In a bid to bolster its seafood offerings, Aldi has poured over £45 million into the British seafood industry this past year. This substantial investment aligns with the supermarket's ongoing commitment to high-quality British produce and support for local suppliers.
Aldi has long partnered with Scottish supplier Thistle, a relationship spanning more than two decades. Thistle provides a variety of products, including coated fish, fish cakes, and Aldi's Specially Selected frozen cod and haddock.
This year alone, Aldi has introduced 20 new fish products sourced from the UK, including British Pollock and Chunky Breaded Cod and Haddock. This expansion reaffirms Aldi’s position as the third-largest fish retailer in the UK.
Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK, expressed pride in these enduring partnerships, stating, "At Aldi, we are incredibly proud of the long-standing relationships we have with British fisheries across the country. This increased investment demonstrates our commitment to these partnerships and our dedication to providing our customers with high-quality, sustainably sourced British fish."
Aldi collaborates with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership (SFP) to ensure continuous improvement in fisheries. It also adheres to certification programmes like the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for wild-caught fish and the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) for farmed seafood.
In recognition of its sustainable efforts, Aldi was named the MSC UK Mid-size Store Retailer of the Year in 2023 for its growing range of MSC-certified products.
Tom Church commented, "Aldi's investment highlights their commitment to quality British seafood and supporting local fisheries."
