Aldi's 29p Banana Blossom: Bargain or Bust?
Aldi is dipping its toes into the world of vegan alternatives with its new banana blossom in a tin, available for a mere 29p. Always eager for a bargain, one money-savvy TikToker tested the product, sharing his not-so-flattering review online.
Sarah Bull at The Sun reported that the man, known for his Cost of Living Crisis TikTok page, was far from impressed with Aldi's plant-based alternative to fish. Opening the tin, he was immediately discouraged by its appearance. Without any cooking instructions, he decided to boil it. His conclusion after tasting? It was reminiscent of a "wet tangy nettle" and he wouldn't be going for seconds.
Despite his dismay, several commenters pointed out that he might not have approached the banana blossom in the best way. Many suggested marinating and frying, rather than boiling, to get the best from this plant-based alternative. "You're supposed to marinate it and make a faux tuna salad!" remarked one. Another lamented his decision not to look up cooking instructions, while some insisted that like jackfruit or tofu, the banana blossom is a base that requires seasoning.
The man remained unswayed, noting that not even the best seasoning could save it for him. Nonetheless, the experience brought some humor to others, with one commenter mentioning they laughed out loud at his culinary journey.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "It's always worth exploring new budget alternatives on the market, but preparation is key. Always research how to cook and season unfamiliar items."

Check Out These Money Saving TipsWhen I lived in Malaysia my friend made me banana flower curry. Mostly because I couldn't stop photographing them and she thought it would be funny. The flower was really only for bulk and texture, I can't really remember much about the taste but it was an interesting thing to have.
Vegan food cheap??? I don't think marinating or frying it would even make it taste "normal". In the vegan section of most supermarkets the vegan ready meals consist of pastry or breadcrumbs and cost more than the non vegan food.
Surely in a tin it would lose a lot of texture and nutrients. Tinned foods are not ideal foods typically. Fresh or frozen is much better.
