Want to create an amazing nursery for your kids, but don’t want to spend a fortune?
Then take inspiration from this creative mum, who pulled off an incredible safari-themed bedroom for her son, spending only £500 in the process.
Kayleigh Aspin, a full-time mum from Northumberland, hunted on the internet for cheap deals, and made her own accessories to keep costs down.
Kayleigh, who has one son and two foster daughters, told money-saving community LatestDeals.co.uk: "I kept seeing safari-themed bedrooms online and I fell in love with them.
"They always seemed a bit too grown up for my 18-month old son Parker though, but I thought I could definitely do this and make it more of a fun design for him.
"I brought in pops of colour by adding fun cushions in his cot, plush animals in his ‘zoo’, and - Parker's favourite part of his room - his helicopter light fitting, which was a bargain find at only £19.99 from Amazon.
"I also wanted to make his room more unique and special by making some of my own items. I made the leaf garland, the large wall canvas and I crocheted a big cloud pillow for his cot.
"It took me two days to make the garland. I came up with the idea during a midnight feed.
"I bought the jungle leaves from Shein and attached them to some twine, then simply hung it up with some command hooks! In total it cost me around £20 to create.
"My favourite make is definitely the canvas. I got the idea from a YouTube video I saw a few years ago.
"I bought the safari themed tapestry from Shein and made a frame using some 1x1 wood, then stapled the tapestry onto it. It came out so beautiful and at a total cost of only £11!
"I can’t wait to make more of these for the rest of the house.
"I’m a single mum and did all of the room myself, working through Parker's naps. It took me over five months!
"I also had to do it on a budget. Shein is amazing if you’re working on a budget! A lot of Parker's bedroom is made from Shein items.
"I did splash out on some pieces though. I just couldn’t resist the Barnaby Bear collection from Next.
"The curtain holders were the first Barnaby Bear items I saw and once they arrived I went straight back online and ordered more from the same range.
"The Barnaby Bear shelf is gorgeous and I’m so pleased I bought it as it’s such fun design and it ties in so well with his room.
"The bookcase was from Amazon. There was a voucher for 5% off which brought it down to £68.99.
"The radiator cover was a bargain find at £20 on ebay!
"I love to support small businesses too. His clock - another of Parker's favourite items - was bought from a shop on Etsy called LittleTimbersClocks.
"They kindly personalised it for me and it looks amazing. Parker loves to watch the hot air balloon pendulum swinging and he gets so excited about it. His new favourite word is ‘clock!’”
Kayleigh is over the moon with how Parker’s safari room turned out, and is proud that she made many of the items herself, helping to keep the budget to £500.
"I’m absolutely in love with it now that it’s finally finished,” she adds.
“The room came to around £500 including the furniture.
"I didn’t realise till now how little I spent, even though I splashed out on a few things and paid more than I normally would have. I’m over the moon I stayed within my budget and still made a perfect room for him.
“I’d definitely use sites such as Shein. Their products are such good quality despite their prices. If you log in every day you get points which convert to money and you also get 20% off your orders. It’s amazing! I would never have pulled it off without Shein.
"I’ve loved every second of putting it all together, and I loved coming up with new ideas to make it that little bit more special. It’s definitely been a labour of love!”
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, comments: “I can’t think of a better bedroom for an animal-obsessed kid!
“Parker’s bedroom is a true safari paradise - and what’s even better is how much love and care his mum Kayleigh put into creating it just for him.
“She not only kept costs down but also added so much individuality by creating her own items and supporting small businesses.
“For anyone keen to recreate this look, I’d definitely make like Kayleigh and try your hand and making your own accessories - not only is it much cheaper, but creativity has been shown to reduce anxiety and stress.
“Plus, it makes the room totally unique, as no one else will have those items!”
