Asda Converts 116 Co-Op Stores in Mega Expansion
Hey there, Deal Hunters!
Got some hot off the press news for you! Asda's about to become an even bigger player in the convenience store scene. Ruby Flanagan at Mirror reported that between now and next March, we’re going to see 116 former Co-op sites turn into Asda Express stores. With 11 already up and running, we're set to see some serious savings in the coming months.
Here’s the scoop: Last year, Asda bought 132 Co-op forecourts for a cool £438million. Solidify their standing as the UK's second-largest supermarket chain and expand their footprint in the convenience store sector. This means more choice and potentially lower prices for us shoppers. From what I gather, the Asda Express sites will have around 3,000 products, and get this, they're boasting an 8.9% cheaper price tag compared to the old Co-op prices.
Wondering if there's an Asda Express popping up near you? Some of the first stores have already landed in places like Yorkshire, Leicestershire, and even Devon. They’re not stopping there. Another 105 are rolling out across the UK in early 2024.
The shift also means around 2,300 Co-op workers will don the Asda uniform, a move that Mohsin Issa, Asda’s co-owner, describes as "an incredibly exciting moment" for the business. They’re all about expanding their reach and delivering Asda's value in groceries and fuel to even more communities.
Now, I won't list out all the new locations here (because that's a LOT), but if you’re eager to know if one's coming to your town, check the Mirror’s detailed list.
To sum it up with a bit of insight, Tom Church, Co-Founder of shopping community LatestDeals.co.uk, remarked, “This aggressive expansion from Asda signifies the ever-changing landscape of UK retail. Deal Hunters should keep a keen eye on this, as it could spell big savings and more options on the horizon.” Happy hunting!
Good to see a bit more competition in the convenience store sector. Within about a mile of my house I have 2 coops, 1 Tesco Express, 2 One Stops (Tesco) and a Morrison's Daily (not very well run to be honest). There is another convenience store but I've forgotten the name of it, might be independent like a Premier franchise (Tesco again I think as they own Booker).
