British Gas Urges Pensioners to Claim Winter Support as Letters Hit Doormats
- British Gas is reaching out to two million pension-age customers, encouraging eligible individuals to claim pension credit.
- The letters aim to help pensioners access winter energy support through new means-tested criteria.
- British Gas Energy Support Fund to reopen, offering up to £2,000 grants for struggling households.
British Gas is reaching out to pensioners across the UK, with two million letters set to arrive in the coming days, reminding eligible customers to claim winter fuel support. This effort, driven by recent changes in eligibility criteria, focuses on encouraging pensioners to claim pension credit, which now qualifies them for the winter fuel payment. Previously, all individuals over 66 were eligible, but this winter, it’s restricted to those receiving pension credit and certain other benefits.
Olivia Marshall reported in The Sun that British Gas is also enhancing its winter support scheme, adding £40 million to its budget for energy relief measures. The scheme now offers up to £2,000 in grants for customers with overdue energy bills, an increase from last winter's £1,500 cap. Those eligible can apply from November 4, with requirements including proof of income, debt level, and recent financial advice.
British Gas’s CEO, Chris O’Shea, highlighted that, despite slight relief in cost-of-living pressures, many households are still struggling. “We are committed to ensuring that all pensioners are fully informed about their eligibility for pension credit, which can make a significant difference in their financial wellbeing,” he said.
Tom Church, Co-Founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commented, "Raising awareness on this kind of support is essential, especially with increased costs impacting basic needs. Every bit of relief matters, especially for pensioners on a tight budget."
