If you have a plain, boring wall at home you don’t know what to do with, take inspiration from this eye-catching idea.

Anna Supol, 35, a senior finance administrator and mum of two from Bristol, was keen to create an inspiring wall for her kids, but didn’t know where to start.

After brainstorming with her children, she set about creating a rainbow affirmation wall, but didn’t want to spend a fortune on the idea.

After buying tester pots of paint and designing her own prints, Anna’s wonderful rainbow wall came to less than £108 - and it’s a hit with the whole family.

Anna told money-saving Facebook group DIY On A Budget UK: "The original idea came from our kids.

"During lockdown we spent lots of time colouring rainbows, and as they were only three and five years old at the time, I’m sure if they could, they would’ve painted the entire house rainbow, inside and out!

"We were brainstorming a lot what to do with that large wall leading up to the top floor where their bedrooms are, as we have a minimalistic black, white and grey decor throughout the whole house, but wanted something more colourful for the kids.

"They came up with the rainbow wall, but it was down to me figuring out the 'how to' part.

“We spent days looking through Google images, Pinterest and DIY pages, but some colours were too bold, some were too plain, too pastel, too dark… we just couldn’t picture the right colours for our rainbow.

“I ended up consulting with my little advisers, and they got their Legos out suggesting to get lego colours.

“I went to the local B&Q with a bunch of legos in my pocket to see if I could get those colours.

“Unfortunately their machine couldn’t match them as they were shiny and small but luckily we managed to find almost identical colour s on the Valspar stand.

“We spent £18 on six tester pots and we had some pink paint left over from our daughter’s bedroom.

"The second part was to figure out how to draw up the lines for the rainbow.

“Again, I checked Pinterest, Google and Facebook pages, and asked the kids too.

“But I wasn’t too keen on anything I saw, or the kids 'whole wall' or the 'wavy lines' ideas.

"My husband suggested to follow the angled ceiling line from the bottom of the stairs and see if that would work. Luckily, it did.

"After this, it was just a matter of time drawing up the lines and taping them before painting.

“The perks of working from home: I’ve used my lunch breaks to do the painting!

"Once the rainbow wall was done, I was stuck again, as I didn’t have any ideas what to do next.

“The kids loved it the way it was, and wanted to invite everyone into the house to showcase the wall - they even asked all the Amazon couriers if they want to come in to check our rainbow! - but I was still missing something.

"The idea of the 'kind words' came from the kids too, but they didn’t specify which words, so off I went again to figure this out.

"I already had plans putting up some affirmation wall arts in their separate bedrooms, but then I decided to do it on a larger scale.

Image

"Originally I wanted to buy the prints from Etsy, but when I saw that an A3 size print would cost £10 to £20 each plus P&P I decided to do it myself.

“It took me about 10 minutes to design the whole lot, and £2.70 to got them printed at a local printer.

"The total cost for the whole project was £107.70. It cost £63 for nine large frames from IKEA, £18 for the tester pots, £2.70 for the prints, £10 for two rolls of frog tape and £14 for heavy duty picture hanging strips.

“My top tips are that you need patience! Lots of it and then some, because the measuring, drawing and taping is very time-consuming if you want to have sharp lines.

“Pay that extra few pounds and buy the good quality masking tape and make sure to allow enough time for each coats of paint to dry properly before putting the tape over it.

"Since completing the full wall, we had lots of positive feedback from friends, family and now on Facebook too.

“I’ve even had some professional painters and decorators in our house doing some work and they were very impressed too.

"But most importantly the kids absolutely love it. It's part of their morning routine to stand at the top of the stairs opposite the wall and read the affirmations out loud one by one.”
